Hi all

The rear hatch struts were failing on my Cayman so I ordered a new pair (non OEM) on the internet. Now the height to reach when open is very high. I am 6ft 2 and struggle.

The supplier has checked and told me they are the correct Porsche spec (633mm when open). I didnt buy the car new so I dont know what they are supposed to be.

They will shorten them for me at my own cost/request but given that the lid is so high when open I am wondering if they have got the specs right!

Can any Cayman owners shed any light?

Many thanks

Matt

I'm 6'2" and it's not a reach for me to close the hatch.
Have a quick look on Google images for a cayman, you're bound to see a comparison photo.

Thanks, Chris

I mentioned that to the supplier and they said my struts were probably already starting to fail so the hatch was lower than when it left the factory.

Hi Matt

I'm 6ft and have never had a problem reaching the hatch lid to close it. My car is in storage at the moment otherwise I'd oblige with a comparative picture or measurement to confirm.

I have a shot from the front of the car with the hatch open and you could always match that angle to yours to see if it's sitting correctly. Will that help?

cheers

The original Porsche ones are 2 stage gas pistons.
These will stop somewhere half way and when you push, they will open the full length.

Every day a school day, I opened my manual to check and you're absolutely right. I never needed more access than what position 1 offers so never occurred to me to push past that position.

OP, this is a screen cap from a video I recalled seeing, this looks like position 1 which is in easy reach for me.

Yep - 2 stage indeed.

2nd stage is for engine access when in for servicing etc....also find it good for getting the water out of the recess between the glass and the hatch after cleaning

Blimey, had never realised that on mine either, looked at the pictures above and thought that looks ridiculous, mine don't go that high, something else learnt.

On checking mine it appears to be the same, I guess yours is perfectly normal - everyday really is a school day!

When you open the tailgate the windows drop (the same as opening a door) makes shutting the lid easy.

PS Some OPC won't do it because it is not an official, sanctioned adaptation...........

should be.
