If they don't appeal to you, no point in answering.

If they do, what makes them float your boat over the water-cooled models?

It wouldn't bother me if my 993 was water-cooled because I bought it because of its shape.

Any real benefits of having an air-cooled car? Better noise? Feels more 'mechanical'?

Not wishing to start any wars, just interested in why you prefer them

I went for a 964 because of the shape. The fact that it's air-cooled was no big deal, apart from the fact that's how "proper" Porsches used to be.

Not really air-cooled, anyway - oil-cooled.

Its the shape for me, the model I chose was the only one I wanted.
SEX ON WHEELS HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! from the all over view it looks good.

My one has all I want in a classic the looks the power, and bonus going up in value.
However this was not my reason, for buying it in the first place.
Luckly there is a Porsche for everbody's taste and pocket.

Classic shape & noise (I get wind in the hair motoring too).

I would not swap mine for a newer [watercooled] car worth a few grand more as for me it's more about styling than out & out dynamics.

Give me a 930/965/993tt over any watercooled Pork worth the same money.

The sound at all revs. It's a great mixture of metallic engine noises, shrieking fan and burbling exhaust.

The size - short and narrow making it easy to thread along narrow b-roads.

The smell of baked in hot oil.

The heat haze from the rear arches that you can see in the door mirrors and the heat you can feel spilling from the rear arches after you've given the car a proper workout.

Lot of this is not unique to air cooled.

For me, well I hate driving in the UK these days with its overcrowded, over policed roads.

However my 911 makes every journey an adventure, even the commute (when I can use her). Puts a smile on my face that a newer 911 could only do at twice the speed.

3.2 Carrera......
Shape, never bettered
Feel, always a fun drive
Noise, never bettered
Smell, maybe I'm a perv
Size, love the compactness, the water cooled 911's look big
Other peoples attitude, they always come over for a look and chat at the petrol station
All in all, they are just old school

I love my car,

...which you don't get with the water-cooled models.

Sound like it's all about sounds, size, smell and shape.

the shape, noise, agriculturalness, heavy control weights, compact size and nimbleness ..... blah blah ....

The first time I ever went out in a 993 I realised that it wasn't really a car. It was quite an epiphany. It was like a whole new genre. Like there are bikes, and HGV's, tractors, kit cars, caravans etc.. and then there are aircooled porsches. The way an aircooled car is all bolted together, the way it looks and feels, it wasn't like any other car i'd ever been in. No nasty plastics, nothing flimsy, nothing light about its controls, nothing throwaway in nature inside or out. To me it was an entirely new genre and to this day still is. Not like a car but like someting permanent and endlessley collectable, like a Faberge egg, a Tiffany lamp, a Leica M camera.
