Hi Folks,

Bought a stunning 996 C4S at the weekend and in love with it... but...

The seller appears to have made a genuine mistake about it having a PSE. I knew it was a bit quiet but had it in my head it was down to the auto-quiet mode or something and the rest of the car was so good, I had to buy it. Turns out it's only got a standard exhaust with shiny tailpipe add ons though.

A tad gutted as this was one of the few options that were a must have for me, but trying not to get too down about it and hoping someone might know of a PSE kicking about in their garage that could fit the bill or know where I can find one. The current OPC price for one is an absolute joke.

I know I can do a gundo etc. on it, but want to keep the car as close to standard as possible. It's a really nice example and having the PSE on it would make it perfect. At the moment I can't help but feel down in the dumps about making a stupid mistake in not realising it wasn't the PSE due to be so over excited about getting the car itself.

Also just took a colleague out to show it off and the battery has completely died too. Happy days! Loving all the jokes being made about it in the office just now... NOT!! :-(

Cheer me up folks!!!! Any bargain PSEs out there?!?!

Cheers!

Dave.

You'll see one or two per year. Last one I noticed went for £1200.

Look at one of the (many) cheaper options. Sorry to hear about the battery.

As above, really. Second hand PSE's are a rare beast.

Yeah.

Figured they would be like hen's teeth.

I live in hope though! Someone will have one.. I have faith!!

In the meantime... I'll wait for the RAC man to come out and give me a jump. Hopefully it's just the battery and the Bose will start working again too when that's sorted! (currently stuck saying Porsche on the screen)

At least it looks shiny!!

Cheers,

Dave.

The trouble is, they are getting old. Like all 996s the silencers rot along the seams. Some of them will not really be worth buying.

Many people just do the Gundo hack.

Pity new ones are not cheaper. I spent two years watching for them. In the end I changed cars before finding one.

Suggest you have the 'Gundo hack' done by a specialist. Will give you all the sound of PSE but won't be switchable. Mind you, nobody leaves it on quiet anyway.

IIRC, it should cost you about £500.

Or get it done by someone more reasonable for under half that.

I could try and cheer you up by saying PSE is overrated and not worth the money.

Did that work?

Pics will follow when it returns from the garage!

It's now been confirmed. Definitely not a PSE. :-(

Probably just leave it as is for a bit... but if a PSE comes up for a reasonable price.. I'm waiting!!! In the meantime, it would help if everyone could keep telling me the PSE is over-rated and I don't need it etc. :-)

Car is awesome other than that so far. Oh and apart from the dead battery that's getting changed tomorrow. Hoping the garage confirm there's nothing else about to go boom!!

At least I got the 1st weekend out of it before it started to go a bit wrong!

Cheers!

Dave.

Do the hack or buy a nice after market exhaust. My C4S has PSE but to be honest, it's on the loud setting all the time. I really don't think you would miss being able to switch it onto quiet.

Think I'm more likely to replace it rather than hack it.

The current exhaust is the original one, so it'll need changed at some point no doubt.

Love the noise of the PSE, but not sure how I'll feel on the daily commute at 7am.. so the quiet button appeals tbh.

Would like to keep the car close to stock as well. Although.. this may change!!

We had PSE on the C4S and it makes the car. I'd still say do it another way.

I had same with my c4, went to haywood & scott in essex. they done what is called that Gunho hack (or something like that!) its basically the way porsche do there sports pipe(not switchable) with a section of stainless pipe in, you can have inch & quarter pipe, inch & half (this is porsche size) or i had the new one which is 2 inch, it sounds great & not boomy on motorway.. they have to take whole exhaust off & risk of studs breaking. i had 1 stud break & great job £350..Done while i went shopping as 2 hrs from me,nice day out, cost me more in shops for wife ha ha ha..

I honestly think you should just get the hack done.

If you are concerned about resale value, the original 996 system will be rusting at the seams and wont enhance value. But the right sound will.

Anyone who buys your car will want it to sound it should - so you have a win - win !

The 2" hack may be a little too loud. I would go for the 1" or 1.5" hack as it still sounds good.

Relax, brother, I just bought one, probably not a million miles away from you, WITH PSE, and it's nice, BUT. Once I drove a 996 Gen 1 with a screamer of an exhaust and frankly that was a million times better. Now I'm going to do the 'diode snip' in an effort to improve the situation, then I may look at other options.

Just take advice, speak to the likes of Hartech, Larini, and see what can be done. What you want from a nice 996 is to be holding a wheel with the antler crest, while it howls like all the wolves in Bavaria. A switchable PSE won't do that, so here I am in exactly the same position as you, only WITH a PSE.

However I love the car so much that I don't care. We will resolve the situation.

PS Who the f___ wants to switch it off anyway? I want it like that all the time. If you want it to be quiet just ease off the loud pedal.

OP - I helped a friend with a 3.6 Carrera who needed new rear boxes & also wanted more noise & couldn't justify retro fitting PSE.....he bought a pair of Carnewal rear boxes which use original skins & are so good they fool the OPC techies. ..& they make it sound like a 993 though don't drone unlike some of the aftermarket boxes

You'll be very lucky to find an affordable 996 PSE. When mine rusted through I replaced it with a milltek.
