Am I correct in saying my september 2001 996 turbo is going to be hammered with a £475 car tax bill this year ?

Do you mean they have revoked the exemption for cars registered pre-March 2006?

I hope not as mine falls into that category as well. I'd have thought there would have been uproar by now if they'd tried to sneak that in.

No, the big tax bands only come in for cars registered after something like 23rd March, 2006. I would think the tax for your 996 turbo would be about £270pa.

Yup this was how it was going to be. At some time it was supposed to go back from 2006 to 2001.

I was told this whilst looking around a BMW dealership about 2 years back. The sales guy stated that early 2006 cars sold far easier over later 2006 cars because of the hike in VED. But that in the near future everybody within certain emission catagories would be paying the same higher amount anyway, right back to 2001 registered cars.

As far as I'm aware, that is still the case. But be glad to proven otherwise.

I'd be surprised if they lifted this temporary freeze on 2001-2005 cars given the state of the world as it is now. I'd expect that another tax hike would be highly publicised in the media and it would be an easy win for the policital opposition to further promote their own cause.

It will happen eventually though and I'm sure the government are already just itching to pull the trigger on this. My guess is they'll be waiting for an optimum time - probably when some other major world incident eclypses the front pages and they can sneak it in without a big fuss.

I think the whole reasoning behind the 23/3/06 cut-off date is this is the date of the Budget when the big tax hikes were announced; by introducing this cut-off, it meant people buying the most polluting cars from this date knew what the tax rate would be, and it would'nt hit people who'd bought before this date.

Politically, I think it would be a brave politician who tried to implement the big tax bands back to 2001 IMHO

Are there enough people to really care, though? It is only going to affect owners of high performance cars between 7 and 12 years old and how many of those are there out there? Probably not enough to swing any constituencies.

Clearly, they shouldn't remove this tax break as the original purchasers of the cars will be unfairly penalised, and even if the 2001-2006 cars have been sold on since, the new buyers have probably be prepared to pay a bit more for a more tax-efficient car.

I wouldn't put it past them, though.

It is'nt just high powered cars though, most of the 4x4's from 2001 to 2006 would go into the high VED range; a friend of mine in the car trade says he has had several purchases of 4x4's fall through when the buyer finds out it's in the high tax bracket.

Let's hope it never happens, but I would'nt put anything past politicians, remember the scrapping of the 10p income tax, unbelievable !

If you ever want to check exact rates for ANY vehicle just go to :

www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk

Click "Vehicle Enquiry" then click "Next" then enter the registration and select the make and click "enter" and it will show various data including colour, date of first reg, tax rate, when it's due, whether it's SORN, fuel type and so on.

You can also enter the V5C (logbook) reference number and the results will then also confirn whether the V5C is the latest, valid, one or not.

The high rates were announced 23 3 07 and applied immediately to cars up to 1 year old - hence 23 03 06 cut off.

They then intended to apply the rates to all 2001 on cars but relented just before it came in, late 08 I think, when the stupid 15 per cent VAT rate came in temporarily in G Brown's knee-jerk emergency budget, but of course the fear of it had already affected values and saleability of the cars it was due to apply to.

In the next proper budget they announced that 2001 to 23 03 2006 cars were due to have their tax rates gradually increased by 30 pounds per year until they matched those for 23 03 06 on cars, but in acknowledgement of people experiencing hard times no cars would increase on that specific occasion by more than 5 pounds per year.

Sadly, it would seem, that most of the Gov't fits into that bracket in some shape or form.
We, as in GB, used to criticise third world and even many european countries of having corrupt government. We uses to laugh and often mock them. Now we too are ruled by a bunch of me me me criminals.

I always remember an interview with Tony Benn, and while I didn't necessarily agree with his political stance, this comment hit the spot.
"we elect these people to work for us, but they, in turn, want to manage us"
Now I may have got the actual words slightly wrong but that was the message.
We need a Gov't now that will work FOR us, I just wish I knew how to start a political party.

Carbon dioxide is a naturally occurring gas breathed by and indeed essential for plants to exist and therefore us. These cars are not polluting the atmosphere. You must stop spreading the spin from green envyists.

Even my wifes 2002 2 litre Beetle that she uses for day to day transport had this increase in road tax hovering over it and would render it worthless overnight.
Governments increase road tax and petrol duty and wonder why people use their cars less and get lower revenues.
Councils increase parking charges and employ more trafic wardens and wonder why the high streets are deserted.
It would appear that no political party is car owner friendly so I guess as easy sitting targets car owners and enthusiasts are just going to get screwed.
In my case I may well decide to SORN my Boxster (£475 a year) over the winter just as a protest and to preserve the car from the crap they spread on the roads

But seriously you have to be careful inadvertantly spreading junk science from these people, they are good at getting stuff like that in common parlance. And it drives initiatives like for example punative car tax.
