Just bought a 2002 facelift 3.2 S, it's a lovely car.

You will read lots about Porsche paranoia - the IMS issues are well documented & if you are unlucky enough to suffer failure it will be costly.

I think it would be fair to say that it's generally recognised that the 2.7 is the most reliable of that engine type - less stress, less heat etc.

The IMS issue has been done to death and, whilst there are issues, the number of failures is few, you'd have to be really unlucky.

There are some that would have you believe that 996 / 986 /987/ 997 cars engines are made of chocolate and will fail the moment you turn the key!

The forums are full of panic, theories and, in some cases, utter st. Everyone talks about the failures but very, very few have actually ecxperienced it and there are those out the who'll talk up the problem to sell "solutions".

Hartech & Autofarm are the reliable and sensible voices when it comes to the issues and you'll get straight forward & honest answers from both.

As a point to note - Hartech haven't yet needed to rebuild a 2.7 engine - probably all you need to know to make your choice!

In 2005 the IMS bearing and carrier were beefed up and made much stronger, as a result if you can push the funds to a 2007 2.7 car with a good service history you'll not go far wrong.

Have a read of the poverty pork thread. There are lots of prices and information on service and maintenance costs. I paid £341 for a major plus brake fluid but supplied my own oil.

Hi

Not meaning to split hairs but we have built earlier 2.7's. We haven't needed to re-build the post 2005 2.7's ourselves yet.

Happy days - I stand corrected. Still a pretty good advert for the later 2.7's though I'm sure you'd agree?

......well that because the later 2.7 is newer. Some of the older 2.7's are now 14 yrs old?

Indeed and now the post 2005 are as old as 8 years old, what's your point?

Given that post 2005 S models have been rebuilt and 2.7 models haven't I would again say that it's a pretty good advert for the 2.7.

You asked about servicing costs.

Though you may not take it to them OPC's now have fix cost servicing and sometimes chart on the wall to explain what they are. while you are looking for a car why not include you local OPC and ask a few questions.
