Cayman - Optomistic Pricing or Inaccurate Price Guides?
Discussion
Starting to look more seriously at a Cayman to replace my 968.
I'm not in the trade these days and only have access to the likes of Whatcar/Valuations - but understand certainly in the past that this was reasonably accurate. Nevertheless, every car I look at (including private) appears to be at least several thousand ahead of book...
Any thoughts?!

They are all usually a few thousand out. Glass's does not quote Porsches and the cap guide is about 5% out even though it allows for spec and condition. I got cap through which? Subscription.
Best place is to look at the classifieds on ph and the porsche used car locator to get an idea of price. Having said that I still managed to knock off a few thousand, so maybe the cap guide is fairly accurate..
When I was selecting my garage queen, I used cap/ parkers guides to work out the yearly deprecation on trade in rather than price. It helped me rule out some contenders that would make me cry

I have been keeping an eye on Cayman values and agree with what you say about 'trade' values and dealer asking prices. They do seem overpriced and a lot of cars not at OPC seem to stay in stock for ages. I was at BCA auction last week and their was a Jan 2006 CaymanS,61'000 miles'good spec, quite a few stone chips, good michelin tyres and it was bid to £12900 but didnt sell but still £8-10000 under what garages seem to be asking!

.....Glass's does not quote Porsches....
Yes they do, although values can't be adjusted for mileage differing from what they quote as average.http://www.glass.co.uk/FAQ/#VALUATIONS
Which Vehicles Cannot Be Valued On Glass.Co.Uk?
Vehicles Older Than 1992
Glass's does not hold values for vehicles registered before 1992. This is because a vehicle of that age in effect becomes a "Classic", and values revolve around the Condition of the vehicle rather than Mileage and Options.
Vehicles Less Than 6 Months Old
It takes time for our Editors to collect the information required to perform accurate Valuations. Usually 6 months is enough time to do so; however, there are cases where this may take longer.
Commercial Vehicles
Glass.co.uk only provides values for Light Passenger vehicles.
Motorcycles and Caravans
Glass’s has information regarding other vehicles such as motorcycles and caravans; however, at this point Glass’s website does not provide this service. We are hoping to expand it further in the future.
Imported Vehicles
Glass’s only collects information regarding vehicles first registered in the UK. If your vehicle was built outside of the UK for a market outside of the UK it will not be valued (e.g., a US vehicle built for the US market would be a left-hand drive).
Vehicles Manufactured In Low Volumes
The process of collecting information on vehicles is time consuming. In order to be cost-effective, Glass’s focusses on high volume vehicles.
Specialist Vehicles
These types of vehicles tend to have subjective pricing, and their values depend strongly on their perceived value by buyers and sellers. Whilst Glass’s holds information regarding specialist vehicles, we cannot provide a specific enough guide to their values. Examples of these would be Porsches, Ferraris, Bentley’s, etc.
Vehicles Registered Overseas
Glass’s only provides values within the UK; i.e. England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
