Get someone over their to independantly inspect it thoroughly.
You will pay 20% vat on the purchase price and 20% vat on your shipping cost to our HM Revenue and Customs

Not strictly true. Classic car status can reduce cost to 0% Duty and 5% Vat

Actually, 10% duty is added to both first, then VAT @ 20%, so $10,000 (say $9,000 car + $1,000 shipping) becomes $13,200 with both taxes added.

It used to be possible to get Returned Goods Relief on the import duty (the 10%) for items originally manufactured in the EU but I believe this now only applies for items up to 3 years old.

I don't know the qualification criteria for getting the duty waived/reduced, except that about 2 or 3 years ago a friend brought in a historic Lola race car and tried to have the import duty waived on the grounds that it was historically significant by virtue of its racing provenance in the UK but it didn't work.

The advice I was given for importing a 1995 993 was 50 quid in duty and 20% VAT on the purchase cost and shipping.
