GT3RS 3.8 oil change
Discussion
My car has covered 6k, 4k in the last 10 months. Considering an oil change in a couple of months, but Porsche insist there is no point whatsoever until it's done 20k since last change, or 24 months has elapsed.
Credit to them they were very honest, and said "We're happy to take your money for an oil and filter change, but it DOES NOT NEED IT.".
Any views on this?

my view is that you should read the zillion threads that come up every week, realise that not one of the people that have contributed have actually any idea other than their own black magic theories and make your own mind up
or perhaps to summarise...
- change the oil if it looks a bit black
- change the oil if it feels a bit thin
- do you have any idea how hard it is to be oil? Change me.
- Porshce? who? Huh, what do they know? Change the oil.
- I change the oil in my engine every 45 seconds and my engine has done 367,000 miles with no problems

Seeing it from the OPC's view they are just quoting what the book says. They arent going to start telling customers to get oil changed every 6k/1 year etc when the service book says different.
If you feel more comfortable getting it changed for the sake of a few quid, then get it done. Just get a good indy to do it and not stamp the book??

Not seen one, otherwise I wouldn't have wasted my time posting this.

I think you're right. Thanks If you feel more comfortable getting it changed for the sake of a few quid, then get it done. Just get a good indy to do it and not stamp the book??

I change my oil after first 1k miles on any new car and then annually (I only do about 5-7k miles a year) on my daily driver. However, I treat my GT3s differently as oil is cheap and they're driven differently and a 20k/2yr service interval is ridiculous IMHO.
On my 7.2 GT3 I changed it at 1k, 3k just before track day season (6mths into ownership), then again at end of track day season (5 days ish) and again in middle and end of following year's track day season (did more days). I also did the 20k/2yrs service for the stamp. Arguably mine was over serviced, but the oil is doing a lot of work and having relied on engines to keep me in the air that are serviced/oil changed at very different intervals, it's what I prefer to do.
On my RS, first owner changed oil at 1k miles, then at 3k after track season, and it had it's 20k/2yr service at 5,500 with me. I will change the oil on this one at similar intervals to previous car.
It's worth it to me having spent a lot of money in the first place on the car, but I realise it's personal choice, and overkill for most. I could do the oil analysis that Fioran suggested in a recent thread, but I haven't gone down that route yet despite being used to that being done on aero engines.
Bottom line though from my perspective is it's an expensive car, used in extreme conditions (track) and 2yrs (as you're unlikely to do 20k miles in 2yrs in an RS) is far too long for oil to be in an engine used in such a way. OPCs will never demure from service schedule for legal reasons; but if you can afford an RS, it's tyres and brakes, then 8litres of Mobil1 and a clean filter is chickens
t in the scheme of things. All my HO of course...

That's why the service indicator (>997) alters depending on usage/driving style. It could flash up at 5000 miles!SimonRS said:

Thank the dealer for the info but insist on an oil/filter change.Credit to them they were very honest, and said "We're happy to take your money for an oil and filter change, but it DOES NOT NEED IT.".

I will tell you that in teh USA at least to qualify an engine for sale the engine (in a car) must be driven for 100K miles, with the only servicing allowed is oil/filter changes. Thus under these conditions the engine can go in the case of your car 20K miles between oil changes if the car is driven non-stop with no real cool down during that whole distance.
However, after driving various cars for more miles than I can count up sometimes 5K miles in a week's time with an oil change right before the start of the 5K mile trip and an oil change after, I would not drive a car let alone a GT3RS for 20K miles on its oil even if I could drive that distance stopping only for fuel.
In normal driving, to expect oil to not accumulate water and unburned gasoline which dilutes the oil, increases its tendency to foam, reduces its ability to protect under high temp/high load situations, and turns into acid in the oil, over 20K miles of like I said normal use is just crazy. Porsche must be smoking crack. (Or more likely bending under pressure from the greenies.)
Anyhow, it is up to you, your car, but my advice is as I stated above would be to change the oil/filter.
Afterwards, at least cut the recommended oil change mileage interval in half. In the case of my Boxster with the Porsche 15K mile oil service (and 30K mile filter service.. good grief) I cut this down to 5K miles. 265K miles later the engine is still running strong.

So it should. Modern oils contain high levels of detergents to keep your engine clean. A good oil will turn black in <1000 miles!See myth #2: http://www.texlube.com/oilmyths.htm

Irrelevant, and yet to see it...
