That's right, pretty sure it's not MOST. You can also replace the PCM2/2.1 without too much hassle. Only complication would be if Bose amp was fitted, which with PCM 1 I think is remote.
You have all sorts of options, but it depends on how much money you want to part with. I put a 2-DIN unit into a 2005 Boxster 987 a few years ago and for £800 it made a dramatic improvement, but it depends on what you want and how you value the audio.

I bought a Pioneer unit that did everything, from standard Radio/CD/SatNav as well as bluetooth phone integration and hard disk storage for your MP3 music, all of which it did extremely well through a touchscreen interface - and 100 times better than the Porsche kit. To my mind, it was even better than the PCM installed now.
Agreed, the Porsche PCM right up to current is pretty poor compared to other stuff available. I fitted a Zenec NC524 to my 996 and it is now in a 997 that did have MOST but is now by passed. Simple to fit into a 02 car. One thing that Porsche have in common with VW / Audi is that they have a non standard din power supply plug, the permanant battery power is different, you can either modify the plug or get a conversion lead. The two DIN plugs, speakers and power, will fit straight into the replacement unit, fit radio and gps aerials and you are in business. Add ipod connections, rear view cameras etc to taste. The multi cd changer and gps cd unit are simply left disconnected, I removed the GPS cd unit and replaced it with a Porsche oddment box. The one advantage with the Zenec unit is that you can easily remove the SD card containing the maps, (from the front of the unit) plug into your computer and update the GATSO's, mobile sights, red light and avg speed cameras. This is done from sites such as Pocket GPS World UK. This warns of mobile sites which means you get frequent warnings which 99% of the time are not manned but you are warned. It warned my Indi of a temp site which did him on a test drive a month earlier !!! He was impressed. All of these after market units have touch screen, blue tooth, Aux inputs, ipod, DVD, CD, rear view cameras even TV on the Zenec and are way ahead of the PCM.

No pic as I'm on the iPad but I had an Alpine S600R fitted to my Turbo to replace the PCM1. Looks OEM. By all accounts, not a hard job on non-MOST. You will need a suitable surround as the PCM is slightly bigger than a double DIN and a storage tray to replace the CD drive, whatever you fit.If you do a search, you'll find a pic of mine somewhere.
