Hello All,

I have around 10k to spend and I really want a 911. I have never ever owned one before, and my friends are splitting me in 2.

One group saying I will never get a good one for that value and the running costs will be huge.

Other saying, you can pick up one that is around 10 - 12 years old with FSH that will last another 5 years easy. They advised that tyres, and services are expensive!!

What should I do... first off, I really would like to own one, but for my 10k is it worth it? and how much should I allow each year for servicing and stuff....???

Thanks,

FP.

I think you're pushing it. You can afford the cheapest of 911s but maybe not the upkeep it would deserve.

Buy a Boxster?

Plenty out there at that price, just be careful and go in with eyes open. Make sure you have a contingency fund just in case.

Read some of the poverty pork threads. See also Readers' Cars section. Then you can make an informed decision. First year could cost you £200 or £5000.

Define expensive? What are you prepared to pay on upkeep and how long do you want to own it?

If its 6 months to tick a box, you could get one just serviced that will be fine. Possibly.

Servicing isn't that bad, £300-600ish (very ballpark), tyres and brakes aren't cheap. Mine are about £350 each and a full set of brakes is about a grand from an indi.

My advise if you are on a budget would be to save a continengy fund first and expect to use it. As soon as you have used it up, sell it on. You might have it for 3 months or 3 years, but you'll have not spent a penny more than you expected that way.

Whether you buy or not depends on your attitude to risk. I guess your mates saying do it are more risk takers and the ones saying don't are more level headed with purchases. Head or heart time. I say fek it, you only live once. wink

Good luck with your search. smile

I'll go against the general consensus and would say "do it!".

I bought a sub 10k, actually a sub 9k 996 carrera 2 about a year ago and in 15,000 miles I have been smiling all the way.

Tyres, good Falkens don't need to be 350£ each
Service, as said above, £300 to £500. Currently £395 all in at OPC with fixed pricing.

I upgraded the IMS on mine and did the front brakes.

The front brakes were about £300.

Fuel consumption is very reasonable

VED is low

insurance is good.

Go for it.

I agree, go for it, only live once!

10k is very low budget wise, and it's definitely advisable to have contingency fund, they aren't cheap cars to fix, and if you don't have the money, you'll either not be abe to drive it, and that will be torture, or you'll drive it and cause potentially more serious expensive problems! What i am saying is you have to be very proactive with maintenance and not allow things to develop !

It can be done, can't remember which magazine ran the 10k 911 article, but worth a read if you can find it???

I'd save a little longer, get maybe another 5k together and then get a better car, ! There is the Boxster, and i am sure you could get a 2.7 Cayman for around 15k soon, maybe worth look, although they aren't a 911 !

You're right, they're not - they'd be a generation newer than a 911, have the engine in the right place, have a better interior but wouldn't have the bragging rights of 'I've got a 911' when you're down the pub ;-)

Go for it. Find an early 996 with FSH either OPC or indie, forget a car that doesnt have Porsche in the stamp somewhere, and do not worry about mileage.

If the consumables have been kept up to date ..... and there are alot of owners that do this, as well as those that don't, you could have very little expenditure over the year.

History and paperwork is everything, mileage is not.

Do it.

But fully expect to spend £1,000 a year on average.

Some years will be cheaper, but be ready to expect the big bills.

But when asked by friends what you're driving these days you can casually say "just an old 911".

My budget was £10k and I managed to get £600 change when I bought this one

Good job too as the water pump (and battery) failed on the way home. £500.

I was very lucky to find it, and took me a few bids with the seller. My friends will call me unlucky as I have had to fork out £3.5k on an engine rebuild but do not let that put you off, I was just unfortunate and a lot of the work was maintenance/preventative/piece of mind.

Thanks for all you help.

I will start looking for a 911 with full service history and that has had all the bits changed when it should of.

When looking at them, what should I be looking for specific to 911's? Has there been any recalls? Any bits that should of been changed? Can I get a readout from any software from any on board engine management?

I am excited, and buying a ford focus or 350z doesnt do it for me.

Easy answer is Yes, you can have it plugged in to a computer and see if any fault codes etc are logged.
But the best thing to do is either take along someone who knows them inside out, or shell out for an independent inspection if you find something that looks suitable.

A potential seller will have no problem in letting someone inspect the car if they are confident in the car.

10k isnt much to spend for a 911, but its certainly possible with the numbers of cars out there now!

You didnt specify if you were looking for a 'modern' 911 - ie 996 or were looking more classic - 3.2 / 964??? That will have a big impact on the available market!

You'll not get a 964 or 3.2 for 10k these days, they've finally out grown that.

996 or Boxster is the only choice.
