991 GT3 vs. wait for new 991 Turbo - Can't Decide
Discussion
Wonder if anyone could help with my dilemma - I currently have and love a 997G2 Turbo and also have a deposit down on a new GT3 (4th in que , I think) Should I wait for the new Turbo or swop to a GT3 ?- I love the sheer efficiency and 2 sided nature of my Turbo ( quiet , efficient and calm & a mental racer all in one package) but prefer( or maybe I just fancy a change) the looks of the GT3 and am hoping that the 991 version is slightly more refined than the 997 version and as such will not become annoying as an everyday driver - any thoughts ?

Unanswerable question - no one has driven a GT3 or Turbo and we aren't you.
Thanks - not sure I fully understand your point re "no one has ever driven a GT3 or Turbo" sorry , could you explain a little bit more please? I realise that you are not me - just canvasing opinion really .s2000db said:
If you're going to track it then GT3, if you want to blow everyone off the traffic lights apart from a Veyron, then Turbo...
Thanks ; the car is for the road not the track , however , I fancy the idea of a car that looks like a track car for the road - maybe I should keep my Turbo , buy the GT3 in the same colour and hope that my family don't notice !!I think what the previous poster was suggesting is that neither the turbo nor gt3 versions of the 991 are out there to test on the road.
I suspect that both will be quicker, more refined, more comfortable and, as a consequence, slightly less involving than the current 997 models.
The major characteristic differences are going to be as now - engine sound and torque profiles plus two vs four wheel drive. You can experience these differences in the latest 997 models - just increase the speed and dilute the interaction to project what the 991 versions will be like.

Cheers Peter , thanks for taking the time to post your really informative comment .I suspect that both will be quicker, more refined, more comfortable and, as a consequence, slightly less involving than the current 997 models.

Sounds to me you possibly do fancy a change to the GT3, just not fully convinced yet.
For road presence the GT3 is very hard to beat, and the noise is really special, can't see the new one disappointing in these areas to be honest. On the present car, one of the main criticisms for everyday driving was the heavy clutch, as this has now gone PDK that shouldn't be an issue. The front lift is available along with normal seats, so I can't really see a downside for everyday driving now, unless you really want/need 4wd.
On that basis I think you should go for the GT3, what's the worst that can happen apart from losing a bit of money !!
If you don't use it as a daily driver, I'd go for the Clubsport version and get the full GT3 experience with buckets etc. You can still go touring with the cage providing decent clothes hanger space.
I've had both comfort and CS, and will be going for CS again next - it just feels better, IMO at least.

Very funny comment thanks , made me laugh - yes I probably do fancy a change & not fussed at all about 4WD - just don't want to end up with a car that grates on me when I just want to get from A to B - turbo v good at that as completely schizophrenic - in a good way . I know it is only my own opinion - but I really don't get this thing about GT3s as daily drivers.
I had two with buckets and a cage and both were used as daily drivers when I was about to use them. I really don't get the heavy clutch thing - modern 911s (996 onwards) have got pussy clutches compared to earlier cars, even a vanilla 993.
If a manual car is too much for you get to the gym!

Actually I don't get the heavy clutch thing either, thought it was only fair to mention it though as it always comes up as an issue for some.I had two with buckets and a cage and both were used as daily drivers when I was about to use them. I went to Silverstone last year and did the GT experience at the Porsche Centre and I absolutely bloody loved it, so much so I told the instructor I didn't want to try the GT2 I just did the full 90 minutes in the GT3, an absolutely fantastic machine and driving home in my 650hp Nissan GT-R seemed a bit dull if you can believe that!
I can't see any reason why the 997 GT3 couldn't be used as a daily car if anyone so desired let alone the 991.
Having said all that, I personally wouldn't consider any new car Porsche make other than the GT3 so maybe if you have to ask then the Turbo is the answer.
My advice get the GT3

id honestly wait until the specs are out on the Turbo and then weigh up the options.
all bets are off with this new GT3. its a new type of car and nothing is carrying over from the versions that have gone before save for the badge. any info anyone tries to draw from a 996 or 997 is irrelevant. none of the "givens" from the previous GT3s hold. they may all be there in the end but its not a slam dunk sure thing by a long shot. there are many many questions for the new model.
new steering, new gadgets, new luxo interior, new trans, new engine and sitting perhaps highest of all, new weight.
theres already significant light starting to shine through the carefully managed wallpaper of the new car from the cracks behind but only time will tell how deep any of these turn out to be.
the turbo could very well be the car to have once more but until its specs are out one cannot say. one thing to consider is that if the new turbo is a similar weight to the new GT3 the landscape changes very quickly in its favour though thats for sure.
unless you need to be in the first car that rolls into the dealer, the smart money is on waiting to see what the substance is on each before deciding anything.

Unless Porsche have messed up which I doubt, the new GT3 will most likely be an amazing car - granted a GT3 not exactly as we know it, but an amazing car all the same.
We already know the 991S is pretty impressive along with the new Boxster and Cayman, I really don't believe they could have dropped the ball with the new GT3.
I stand to be corrected - but we'll see.
