Help please.

Got a very annoying stone chip in the middle of the bonnet of our new 981, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Quick question - is guards red, just guards red, whatever the model/age etc? And where's best to get a touch up pen? Halfords was a non-starter, too used to owning a Renault!!

Many thnaks.

Hi,
just order from your nearest OPC. They'll take your reg number to confirm the exact colour and my parts guy just pops anything small like that in the post, so I get it through my door in a day or two.

Maybe apply it with the end of a cocktail stick or tooth pick for more accuracy than the brush you get. just drip a small amount in and repeat as necessary once it's dried until it's filled the chip. smile

Can I just add rather than use a cocktail stick or tooth pick.. Try a smart phone stylus..

Like the ones above.. The rubber tip is more forgiving when touching up...

Dip the stylus in the touch up paint.. Then scrape off te excess before touching it against the car.. Also make sure you build in layers.. It's not a job to rush.

Mornin' Clark,
yep that's what I use, size "00" or something. I just thought the op is more likely to have a pickle stick or tooth pick.

The front of my GT3 is peppered all over so I'm going to have to tidy it up for this summer until I have it all sorted next winter.

Have you ever used Chipex? I've read good and bad. I don't expect it to be any less visible than a touch up but is it easier to cover multiple chips than dotting each one carefully with a brush?

I've never used it mate so can't really comment. I can't see it being that great or everyone would be using it by now. I've always been a "if there's more than a dozen chips then get it re-sprayed" kinda guy biggrin

Ha, yeah me too, but I also get carried away and also take the "Do it right, do it once" approach which has meant my planned front bumper spray is now, bumper, bonnet, wings, sideskirts and mirror covers. Only the bumper and skirts are peppered but if I'm stripping it I'll do the lot.

That will have to wait til next winter now though hence the need to touch it up for the summer.
I'll just sit and use the touch up paint I have then, one day and see how it goes.

Cheers. smile

I've used touch up paint from Dr Colorchip. Very good stuff and does not come off the moment a pressure washer goes anywhere near your car.

I used a non official touch up and the match wasn't great, go for an official one, they're only £14 fill in the chip and use a touch of lacquer to seal. Then polish down to flatten the bump you'll have most probably left and remove and to also remove any excess.

I might give this one a go in future, just a note on the guards red touch up, just recently used a genuine Porsche one on mine, at first it looks like the colour match isn't right, bear in mind in dries to a far better match!!

Have you considered paint protection film ?. I have it on my 997 and no more worries about picking up stone chips !.
