Where to look for a good 944?
Discussion
Hi all,
Not usually a poster on this section, but my circumstances are changing and I've always wanted a 944.
I've been keeping an eye out on the usual places such as eBay and Autotrader, but it seems that listings are polarised into doggy and cheap or decent and way overpriced. Maybe I'm just expecting too much, but I thought that a budget of 2.5-3k for a decent 2.5 or 2.7 would be acceptable? I'd like some history and evidence of the belts been done ideally, although I guess if its cheap then i'd just get that done as my first job.
Does anyone have any other good places to look? I signed up for the Porsche Club GB today, but didnt appear to be many 944's for sale.
Thanks
Phil

There always seem to be several on this site:Not usually a poster on this section, but my circumstances are changing and I've always wanted a 944.

I noticed when looking for a 944 myself last year, that some of the cars advertised on Car and Classic didn't seem to appear elsewhere.
The fact of the matter is there are not many left and all the really good ones have now settled into long term ownership by enthusiasts so rarely come up for sale. The cheap ones are cheap for a reason and often need the same amount spending again to bring up to what I'd all a good standard.
Because of this the cheap ones get bought by someone looking for a cheap Porsche but then they get the first £1000 repair bill or realise it needs £2000 of rust and bodywork repairs so it gets sold on or scrapped.
Pistonheads, Car and Classic, Autotrader, PCGB and Tipec websites will hold most of those for sale

Ebay also has some of the good cars, and I've seen more than a few good ones from traders, taken in PX and punted straight back out as they don't know the cars.
As said, you have to wade through a lot of poor cars to find the best, but it's worth the effort., We had a fantastic-looking one come up from someone on the PCGB forum recently, after he'd been getting very demoralised with us pointing out faults on adverts he'd seen.
You will find a good one, they are out there, but many have big bills looming. Often why they're being sold, and they can shine-up very nicely in ads whilst hiding a multitude of potential costs. Learn to ask the seller the right questions before travelling is the best advice!

Hi Phil,
I have a 1988 944 2.5 Lux for sale in the adverts on Pistonheads.
It has plenty of history with it and the belts etc were done in April 2012. It has just been serviced and has a fresh MoT.
It's a really nice original car and is available for £2,000.
Let me know if you would like more info about my car.
Ian

Hello,
It's certainly worth a look in the TIPEC (The Independent Porsche Enthusiast's Club) classifieds;

Good luck with the search, the 944 is a cracking car

I bought my 944 through Autotrader, it had been ignored due to the faded paint and mileage, but was actually a solid and mechanically well cared-for car that served me well.
I sold it and bought my 968 through PMs on the PCGB forum, neither car was ever formally advertised but made for a very easy pair of transactions, the prices were fair and both cars had had their histories laid bare online
Get yourself on PCGB and TIPEC forums and ask around, there should always be an owner that lives near an advertised car to check it out for you, I have certainly done that for a new forumite and saved them a long, wasted trip

Still on the hunt though, although my OH is quite strict on the colours I cant buy (gold, silver, white!)
Cheers!
Well, the really good (subject to seeing it, of course) one discussed on the PCGB forum hasn't been bought yet.....Cheers!
It's the wrong colour for you though. I have to say that with a 30-year-old car the last consideration should be colour, bodywork followed by mechanicals should be first, I understand that people set their hearts on a colour. I was always keen to get one in Titanium, so it seemed like fate when the right one came up at the right time.
This is a very good point - ive been in touch with Ian about his as it does seem a bargain, although I would love a different colour if poss!
