996 Carrera with 100k+ - A Good Buy?
Discussion
I went to look at a 51 plate 996 Carrera today . It seemed well looked after a FSH (Porsche & Specialist) backed up with stacks of bills / receipts. However, a couple of things got me windy: 120k on the clock & 7 Owners in 12 years.
No evidence of any leaks but the only real worry is the bore scoring. Is a 120k car closer to its engine meeting its (inevitable?) demise?
Any other thoughts? (Car was £12k BTW)
Thanks

For Comparison, I sold my 03/53 C4S in Seal Grey with Black for 15K last Nov. 95,000 miles, I was the second owner, it had an OPC and Hartech (Transferable Maintenance Plan) history with supporting invoices from new. New tires, fresh MOT and major service the month before sale.No evidence of any leaks but the only real worry is the bore scoring. Is a 120k car closer to its engine meeting its (inevitable?) demise?

In priciple, yes, absolutely, but £12k does seem a bit high I'd have thought.
It's not without its risks (is any 2nd-hand purchase?) but in terms of what you get for the money 996's are an absolute steal, and at £12k, your libility i.e. purchase price - scrap value (if it all goes spectacularly wrong) is probably only around £5k, so I'd take those odds.
Tp put it in perspective, a new Mondeo will lose you £5k in the first year guaranteed.
There have been a few threads on high-mileage 996's - I'll see if I can dig a few out for you.

I'd disagree on the scrap value with a blown engine - sadly it'd be easily below £5k, unless you were to break it yourself and sell it piece by piece. To put it in perspective, a new Mondeo will lose you £5k in the first year guaranteed.
Thanks all for the responses.
I went and had another look at it, sat in it and without a test drive I found that, like a 986 Boxster, my back and the Porsche seats do not get on. As a result, the risks of borkage and the like are all a bit academic. So no dream 911 for me.
Seems I'll have to look elsewhere for something which is "Seeker Back Friendly". Which, I may have found.....

Am i right that it really doesn't matter how high mileage the 996 is if all services are made properly? I heard that it is quite reliable car with reasonable running costs. Ims problem can happen or not. if the engine has been changed or the original engine has over 100k miles on it, it can last like 250k miles or so..
Does anyone have a high mileage 996?

I sold my 996 at 126k. I'd say a 996 is a great high miler car (mine was my daily driver). The initial cost of a C2 should be peanuts, but here's what the maintenance was like for me:
126458 £ 200.00 Replacement speed sensor
125107 £ 600.00 Replacement bumper and wing - paid for by neighbour
125096 £ 1,453.63 MOT, replacement M030 suspension, steering rack arms, front strut top mounts
124500 £ 40.00 Small dent - kicked? Fixed.
119205 £ 595.00 Milltek stainless steel exhaust
119205 £ 1,090.92 120000 mile service, rear anti-roll bar bushes, rear window trim, exhaust bracket
113658 MOT
113586 £ 60.00 Replacement windscreen
113586 £ 643.59 Tyres 265/35Z18 x2 Michelin PS 225/40Z18 x2 Michelin PS2 N3
112859 £ 323.84 fit lower wishbone arms, replace seized eccentric screws, lateral control arms
£ 149.50 control arms
£ 35.56 eccentric screws
£ 220.61 lower suspension arms
109000 £ 14.81 replacement number plate
126458 £ 200.00 Replacement speed sensor

A lot of arms lol. But yeah, you did have quite cheap 20k miles. Was that M030 suspension tired or something like that when you replaced it? Does those costs inc labor or not? Did you enjoy driving it? Can you remember what kind of was fuel consumption?126458 £ 200.00 Replacement speed sensor
