(Im sure its been asked before, but Im new to this site)

Ive been wanting a 997T for a while but just seen some cheeper, lower milage and high spec'd 996 Turbo S in Classifieds

I really hate the lights on a 996 (to much like a Boxster) but surely thats not enough reason to say no.

What are the pros and cons of each

Personally, I think the only real downside of a 997 is the cost.

If I were spending that kind of money on a car then I'd want something that didn't feel like a compromise and get the 997.

It's quicker, more refined, better handling and has a more modern interior (and more conventional 911 shaped lights).

997: A fair bit more powerful, with a load less lag. A night and day better interior. Better looking lights.

996 S: Nicer wheels, Better brakes (more of a liability on an old car (?))

I've owned both. Both were brilliant cars. I had my 996tt for nearly 3 yrs, which is a record for me. Not as refined as the 997, but just as much fun. My 997 had ceramics which were very effective and also progressive, but i'd never have them again because of the noise they made.

The 997 is a nicer car to drive and i'd go for that and personally i think it looks better too. However, you'll suffer very little depreciaton on a 996tt against which you'll have some meaningful bills over time (rads, clutch etc). My guess is the 997 will still fall by 4 or 5 grand a year for a bit, depending on how new it is.

I've got my 996Turbo S for sale on PH at the moment, its a cracking car, full OPC history and the PCCBs don't squeak, Most of the depreciation has happened already the purchase invoice was around £100k. Buy one of these relatively rare (only 600 coupes) and you'll not lose any where near as much as you would on a 997 Turbo.

Car needs to go shortly as funds needed to help my son purchase his first property.

I would be selling the son first or get him to live in the car.............

I had the same choice, having come from a 997.1 GT3, but needing more seats.

I chose the 996 Turbo S after looking at lots of both. Ultimately it was about £15k cheaper than an early 997 Turbo in equivalent condition (June last year), but it's a year older and has more miles; in the 9 months since then the gap has narrowed. Just beware there are a lot of 997 turbos which have been used as daily drivers by people who weren't so precious about them, so don't just compare the top end of the 996 market with the bottom of the 997s. At least there are very few 996 Turbo Ss to choose from!

The 997 certainly felt faster with less lag (especially the late .2 Turbo S PDK I tried to set a somewhat extreme top end comparison!) but the 996 felt more direct and raw. Probably the lack of PASM and the more pronounced turbo engine characteristics. I maintain the 996 has better steering feel, but that might be just me.

The decider was the price, combined with me being happy to have something more compromised in return for the saving (hell, I was an 11 year TVR owner before heading for Stuttgart). I'd also been spoiled by a 100% concours GT3, so to get a '7 Turbo in the same condition would have cost more than I could justify.

You pays your money and takes your choice, as they say smile

Personally I'd go for the 997. I owned a 996TT, and frankly, was a bit shocked at the number of things which needed replacing. I kept it in outstanding condition, but I'd be a bit bothered that any 996TT hasn't had the things done to it which are needed. 996TT are falling to the point that those who buy and maintain them now probably cannot afford to keep the beast in the required condition. The looks of the 997 are far superior, and I never quite got used to the front headlights of the 996.

Go for one that you can still put a Porsche warranty on. My warranty paid out in excess of 25k over the 3 years I had it on my car!

Same here, I bought a mint 996 turbo S manual. More special in my view.
I sold it now.
The only thing I would have replaced it with would have been 997.2 turbo S.

To drive,I preferred the 996 turbo which puts me in a minority ,but overall the 997 makes more sense.
