Hello Gassers

I have been to my local Porsche center a few times. I absolutely can not decide between a 997 4S - 2010 plate - 15k miles'ish or a brand new Cayman S with not much spec, apart from the PCM.

I have been going over and over the decision in my head, and now I have a mild headache.

As this is my first ever Porsche, maybe you can advise.

I do have a wife, and a small baby, so the back seats would be nice.

This will be a fourth car for me - so the needed to use this as an all rounder just isnt there - hence it could be a two seat'er toy just for me and the dog (seat cover will be full installed before paw based entry).

I honestly just dont know which was to go.

I have driven both cars, they were both utterly amazing.

Either or is a dream car for me.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!

If I were in your position, I would go for a 911, especially if you have a small child.

For your budget, you'll be able to get yourself into a 997.1 GT3. Given this purchase will be a 4th car, a toy if you will, then I would have thought that 'special' and 'sense of occasion' would be the most important characteristics you'd require in the car. The GT3 delivers both in spades; by comparison, the 997S or Cayman S might feel a little too 'ordinary' for a 4th car, as they are both mainstream models.

Only way to know is to test drive the GT3. smile

Whilst it might be an odd recommendation on the Porsche forum, your budget (plus a tiny bit) could also probably get you into a Ferrari F430 - again a car that delivers thrills and a sense of occasion like few others.

Im in a very similar situation. Just bought a cayman and kept my other toys. I was originally going to sell everything and get a 911.

I should have stuck to my original plan. Every time I get into the cayman I wish I had got 911

Now im selling three toys and getting a turbo. Best possible toy. For your budget you should get a good one

Remember, a Cayman is not a 911. I forgot that when I bought

OP, out of your 2 choices I'd go for the 911, but I probably wouldn't have that 911, probably a 911C2S or infact a 2WD GTS.

GT3's are quite different and arguably would be the best place to put your money.

Enjoy spending it!

Range Rover Evoque - 50K's worth with all the toys - Love it for the long jounreys and daily commute
A3 Convertible - for the wife
RS Clio - a small car I use to transport the dog, and my fishing gear, to local places - better than a van I thought and nearly as much room with the back seats flat

Sounds to me like 911 could be the magic number.

This was always my original plan.

But then, that Cayman looks AMAZING in the metal - and I heard the S gets round the ring about as quick as a 997 S or 4S - Is this true?

Hmmmmmm - More opinions needed I feel - thank you

Then of your 2 I'd go for a 911 C4S, you'll use it more with the little one.... however I would consider going for something a little more sporty, such as a GT3 as it's a 4th car, can't be too practical now.

having owned a 987 caymanS driven a 997gen2 c4s and c2s.i would say buy yourself a nice 2010/11 60/61 plate c2s.why!well not a fan of the new cayman hate the asian styling better off buying a caymanR with more power for £40k you are going to lose £15k on the 981 caymanS in a year whereas the caymanR will remain steady just like the 987 boxster spyder is holding up against the 981 boxsterS.the c4s imho is not a nice drive you can really feel the weight of the front.so that leaves the c2s which is a lovely allround 911 and prices wont fall much.only buy a gt3 if your going to the track alot it costs more to run and only has 2 seats.
good luck suggest you drive a few to see what you like
if a weekend toy why not a spyder awesome cars but i am bias i have one

I'm also in the GT3 camp and as a 4th car - it makes perfect sense! biggrin

You probably won't use it that often (given your other cars) - but when you do the grin will be ear to ear! Everyone should feel and hear that engine sing all the way past 8,000rpm before they die.

I'm only selling mine as I need something fractionally more practical in my smaller fleet! If I could afford to keep the GT3 AND have a new Boxster S to go with my Audi A3 - then I would have a tool for all occasions! A need for a bigger house (with garage) and a very sensible girlfriend means I have had to choose (although the Boxster as a compromise / consolation prize isn't such a bad one)!

Happy hunting ...... yes

997 C4S is my preference. Back seats, goes well and a generally nice place to sit. AWD great for when you have the family on board, 2WD if you fancy more fun occasionally.

A 911 has another advantage... I get all my fishing gear in mine. Large Korum carryall and bait bag in the front boot, trolley and chair behind the seats and rod holdall in the front footwell... makes for a fun journey early in the morning and some strange looks in the car park when I pull up and remove everything.

Bloody hell - I would never have thought you'd get a 6ft plus rod holdall in a 911!

Maybe I need to sell RS and just have three cars!

Should be fund trying to get across soaking fields though...

The plot is thickening here

Now its not just 911 v's Cayman - its 911 C2S v's 911 C4S v's Cayman....

I haven't actually driven the C2S - maybe I need to do that in the morning ?
