944 or 911 for a Trackday?
Discussion
Odd question yes, have the choice of Silverstone in a solid 944 Lux or a nicely set up 911 2.7 RS Rep?
944 is such a sweet handling car and is a cheap thrasher, 911 is a slightly more precious 71 car with a 2.4s spec engine and freshly set up for the track by JAZ.
Leaning towards the 911 although each time I take the 44 out I get it more sideways and seem to have more fun driving it...
Weird question which would you take?

Purely personal choice, I would take the 911.
I've always always wanted a Porsche and finally realised the dream last weekend, Boxster S now sat in my garage, but not once have I ever hankered after a 944. Dont know why, and i've never even driven one, but something about the styling that doesnt do it for me at all.
As I say, purely personal choice, 911.

I think unless you really want to drive a 911 on track then the 944 makes a lot more sense. Cheaper to get track ready and easier/quicker to master and mpre forgiving when things go wrong.
S2s and Turbos can be very quick indeed, particularly as turbos can be tuned to over 300bhp for a few hundred quid
The 911 looks lovely and will be a bigger challenge, and therefore possibly more rewarding when you master it, but I'd really hate to bin it on the way.
Personally I'd go 944, but one which is tracked prepared, as a good one is a massive track day bargain and hugely competent

944 would be the way to go. I always reach for my 944 keys instead of 911 when going on a trackday for the main reason that I don't worry about binning it so can concentrate on driving. As a novice it's a much better car for learning lines etc. maybe when I get better the added challenge of mastering a rapidly moving 911 through the curves will appeal.
I'm going to Silverstone tomorrow in the 944. Gold one, black wheels with S.LODGE on the side windows. If this the day yiu're on maybe see you there!!
Cheers

Very much a question of skill and how close to the limit you want to run. If you have the skill then the 911 is more fun.
Personally I am OK,not a highly competitive driver,(powerfully built company director of course),but I am considering a 944 myself even though I have 911s. Would not mind having something not hugeky powerful where I could thrash it all day long for a season or two.

im ok, done the nurburgring, bedford 4/5 times, snetterton 3/4 times average to bad i suppose :-)
i would describe my track driving as slow and considered which would suit the 911, but everything has been rebuilt and its just perfect, albeit a little delicate. Jaz fitted new front and rear anti roll bars, front strut braces, geo and toe is all set as is the ride height on adjustable Koni's its a dog leg first and a delicate 901 box though still and i would be playing with £30k+ 40+ year old trailer queen I guess,
the 944 is £1k and bog standard on cheap tyres, i was leant towards the 911 but the 944 is calling me saying please drive the sh*t out of me all day long until my engine explodes
aggggh

aggggh Easiest way to answer this question is to ask what it is you want to get out of the track time. If it is to hone yourself and master a car I reckon out of those two you will get more out of the RS rep, if its to just hoon about and try and set the brakes on fire and kill the tyres without a care in the world take the 944. The 911 of course sounds much better and as part of the whole experience its the one big thing missing from all 944s.

Porsche haven't spent 50 years racing the 944 have they. . . . . .
Porsche haven't raced 911's for 50years.944's have been racing for many years, the turbo was the Cup car prior to 964's.
