I appear to have an issue with my passenger side window. Here's what happens. I unlock the car via the remote key, get in, key in the ignition, and as I turn the key in the barrell to fire the engine, the passenger side window makes a "tensing noise" and attempts to go up vertically - as if it feels it's in the dropped position and needs to rise up again into the door seal. I didn't notice it doing this last week before I took the car in for it's service....

Either I never noticed this before, or something weird is happening.

Also, when I open the passenger side door the window retracts from the rubber seal but makes a god awful screech - almost like fingernails on a blackboard.

Anyone have any ideas? Does it sound like an issue or do I just need to lube the seals with silicone spray/vaseline?

My Cayman does that too.

Every time I turn the ignition key the passenger window makes a noise.

Never really worried about it, maybe it is normal?

They are quite prone to the seals drying out and sticking so try the silicone spray first.

If the car was in for service and if the battery was disconnected the window limits may not have been reset.

Consult your owners manual for the steps to do this.

For 986 models the steps were:

Press and hold the lower window button until the window was fully lowered.

Release the button.

Then press and hold the raise button and keep it pressed at least 5 seconds after the window is fully raised.

Repeat for the other window.

e-Gas might need to be re-calibrated too. Again consult your owners manual.

For the 986 models...

With key off and foot off the gas pedal turn the key to on. Do not start engine. Do not touch gas pedal.

Leave key on 60 seconds.

Turn key off and leave off for at least 10 seconds.

Start engine. e-Gas re-calibration complete.

If this proves to be the "fix" it suggests where you have the car serviced is not as experienced with these cars as they should be...

Oh squeaking... the seals dry out. Do not use any oil/grease this will smear on the glass. My windows squeak and the tech recommended I use some mild soap (Ivory?) rubbing some on the window seal while holding the window away from the seal. The seal I'm talking about is the seal -- inside and outside -- that runs along the length of the window where the window enters the door.

You can use Gummi Pflege if you can find it. BMW used to carry it. You can use this to treat the other rubber seals around the glass and the doors.

Last keep the glass clean especially where it touches the rubber seals.

Thanks Rockster, I'll give that a try. What's e-gas? - sounds like something to do with the air con system!

My 997.2 does it too, and I am pretty sure that the points have been retaught.

Well Rockster, tried resetting the window limits and e-gas as you suggested. No difference. I guess Gummi-Pflege it is then!

Hi Dave, did the passenger side window making a "tensing noise" when the ignition is turned on ever turn into anything more serious ? I've noticed the exact same characteristic on my 987.2 Cayman. It doesn't do it everytime the ignition is turned on though. The are no other window operating issues so I'm also puzzled. I did wonder if it had anything to do with battery voltage.

I have been told rain-x is better that anything silicon based as it doesn't smear on the glass.
