Seems they have near identical BHP, so is the M3 faster, as fast or slower than a non X50 996T?

The M3 isn't even close. Even a standard 996 GT3 will dispatch one easily.

The one on the video has over 440bhp too.

Has both - the 996 tt would pee all over it from a great height !

Or 4wd, or the torque difference?

i had an E46 M3, great car, but only comparable to a normally aspirated 911. I assume its the E92 version being discussed here, quite a bit more power, but I'd be really surprised if it could keep up with a 996TT even in standard form

My lightened and track prepared (but still with the NA 3.4 engine, though some subtle mods) 996 could stay with BMW e46s on the Bedford straight and I overtook a couple...

Now, add caveats as appropriate for corner exit speed etc .

I suspect a Porsche TT, of any variety, would dispatch one pretty quickly in the real world.

The later, V8 M3 is likely quicker than the NA 911s but they are pretty heavy!

I would have thought the pork has a lot more torque than the M3 (not checked figures)... I currently have an E92 M3, and it's only about 300ft/lbs...

Below a 100 mph and on public roads I think it's an academic question - particularly as one is a saloon/coupe and the other a dedicated and expensive sports car.

Personally having gone around the loop on thos decision i think the only thing that i would buy ahead of an e9x m3 would be a 997 turbo or the 991 turbo when released.

No, not a wind up.

Was talking about cars yesterday and a friend said that E92 M3 have 414 bhp, which I thought was the same as a 996T. So I was just wondering what was what.....whats wrong with that?

Soooo it might be able to keep up with a 993 Turbo not a 996 Turbo.

Really, honestly, sometimes when I have questions about cars I enjoy doing some wiki and youtube searches and I learn and enjoy a lot of good info.

What he said!

Plus, as is less often quoted, Torque to weight.

This... Also, turbos have tremendous torque much lower in the rev range. My M3 really needs to be above 7K to release all of its potential (at that point it quite fast).

As said above, no contest. I have had both E46 and 996 turbo and 996 c4s. The c4s was slowest IMO. E46 very slightly quicker. And 996 turbo blows them both out of the water. When upgrading the E46, also drove the V8 M3, and it didn't feel too much quicker than the E46, maybe just because the E46 sound is so awesome and makes the experience great! Again, comparing the E92 M3 to the turbo, no contest. M3 feels very soft in comparison.

Errr, stock 993 turbo is noticeably quicker to 120mph than a stock 996 turbo, only after that do the better aerodynamics of the later car come into play. Tried and tested many, many times.

And since i currently drive a 996 turbo (albeit an X50) and regularly have E92 M3's following me i can assure you that whilst the 996 turbo is quicker when deep into 3 figures, in real world situations between 30mph and 100mph there's not a lot in it if both cars are on the boil.
Wrong gear in either car though is an issue, 996 whilst it builds boost (not long admittedly) or V8 M3 whilst it climbs the revs. M3 really thrives between 5k and 8k rpm but below 4k is rather sluggish.

IMHO of course, but i do have lots of experience with all of the above.

Strange topic this - there's so much more to a car than just its straight line ability as a dragster.

However for the OP - here's something to answer your question:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33BHlQHlkFE

This is what a mere 997S (albeit a Gen-2 PDK) can do to a modded V8 M3 - It isn't pretty (if you're an M3 afficionado).

I think it's fair to say that if a 997S can do this, any (relatively recent) Turbo should be able to acutely 'embarrass' any M3 in a straight line.

According to fastest laps the 996T is a bit quicker but not that much.

I have owned an E46 M3 and an E93 M3. The E93 didn't feel that much quicker (than the E46), presumaly because of the extra weight, but I also drove the E92 and that felt substantially quicker than my old E46.

However, the M3 and 996T not really similar. The former (especially in saloon form) could easily cope as a proper family car (if you can afford the petrol of course as likes a drink in the same way Oliver Reed did!)
