Hi,

I'm off to look at a 1989 3.2 Carrera Sport, so I rang my insurers for a quote to change over the insurance
from my C class Merc. They only want another £90 (my Merc is already in Group Silly), but made it clear that as it was going to be parked
on my drive, they would only insure the Pork for theft if fitted with an alarm and immobiliser.

There's no mention in the ad for the car I'm going to see, but is the alarm / immobiliser fitted as standard equipment by 1989?
I would imagine so, as nothing says 'please steal me' like a 911.

Have they given you a spec the system must meet? Anything fitted in the late 80s or early 90s a. won't meet current standards like Thatcham and b. probably stopped working correctly long ago. The factory alarm at the time was rudimentary/primitive.

I'm pretty sure she said 'Thatcham Approved'. I will check it when I buy the car and change the insurance - I'll volunteer 'factory fitted' and see what they say.

I guess if not I've already found my first contribution to the money pit.

You'll probably find you can make a massive saving on your insurance by going for a specific classic policy, which may not have the immobiliser stipulation either.

Aside from the security equipment, if you're not familiar with them, do get someone who knows that era of 911 well to look over it for you before committing.

A good clue is if it has remote locking, which wasn't factory fitted. If it has a remote, it might well be a more modern alarm.

A lot of 3.2's were retrofitted with the PA1000 system, which is Thatcham Catagory 1. My '89 has it.

Classic insurance policy like classicline and your sorted.

If you are looking at a 3.2 Carrera, I would suggest you concentrate your efforts elsewhere! Insurance is a minor issue.

Can you get classic insurance without garaging the car?

Think that may depend on your post code but IME you need a garage or lock up to qualify for classic insurance.

Also - shop around as some of the quotes are lauhgable and others very reasonable.

My classic insurers have always asked for Thatcham, although Hegarty don't, and that is for a garaged car.

They also stipulate that I can't leave it on my drive for any longer than absolutely necessary, and I live in a good area.

Yes, www.classiclineinsurance.co.uk - they insure my 3.2, no requirement to have it garaged, although it does increase the excess.

/\/\ Awaiting a call back with a quote after putting my info in.

However my current LV policy has 7 months to run, so £92 extra to cover it fully comp doesn't seem so bad. I looked on the Thatcham website, and just got off the 'phone to my nearest approved installer, Sight & Sound in Droylsden, Manchester. The nice man I spoke to quoted £299 incl for alarm and immobiliser, takes a day to fit.

Thinking about it, nothing says 'please steal me' like a nice 911, I'm sure the local scrotes would love to have a go and play 'chase' with the police (until it ends up 'upside down, in a hedge, on fire', to quote one J Clarkson talking about 911s), having a roughish estate nearby doesn't help.

It might be £299 well spent.

Maybe think about a tracker most 911's have one by now.
PM me for more details should you wish.
