996 C2 or Cayman S as a daily?
Discussion
So, with a budget of between £15k and £18k set aside for a fun daily, I had my heart set on the Cayman S.
I have a 964 (and 914 if they count!??!) but both are too good to use on a daily basis (as well as getting on in years).
Now, I could get a '55/'56 plate Cayman S with a few toys, and I have found one that ticks all the boxes for me, but more searching at ads (never a good thing), has lead me to keep going back to looking at a nice guards red 996 C2. It's nearly 4k less and 4 years older.
I've read too many stories on how seals can fail etc on the 996, when in reality, it probably doesn't affect more than 5% of the cars made. Maybe highlighted more because there were far more of them made in the first place, who knows?!
So, does the 996 deserve much of it's negative reputation?
can anyone compare the both from an ownership and driving point of view?
I've never read a bad review about the Cayman S and it is probably everything I want from a car, but with the 996 being 4k less and more power as well as being the proverbial Bigger brother, is the 996 the better choice?

my take on the IMS and bore issues is that it can all be fixed anyway. OK, it may eat up all the difference of the purchase price of the 2, but it's not terminal at the end of the day, and there's nothing to say in owning a Cayman S that I won't encounter such problems, so I'll budget around 3k a year in running costs for either anyway.Coxy914 said:
this is the 996 in question

Thought that would be the one, looks a good example and you could carry it on with Hartech on their maintenance plan, relatively safe buy! Depends really if its another rear engined car you want or the newer mid-engined cayman, they do drive very differently. Either will be a good choice though, and I like red!! http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/p...

the red does it for me to be honest. It is was Silver, grey, black or blue, I wouldn't have looked twice to be honest. Would look good parked next to my 964 though!

I remember that car from ultimate dubs, I fell in love with it, it was the only car I took a photo of(and possibly sat down for an hour to just stare at it, not in a creepy way though, honest)

Unfortunately, I went with people who love 'stance cars' and air ride, so the look on there faces when I declared that my favorite car of the show was a relatively standard 964 was 'bemused' to say the best.
It's actually the car that has made me put up my E60 5 series up for sale to buy a guards red (please don't mock) 944 S2 as a daily, I really love the 964 but to get one would mean parting with my Supra, which will probably never happen, too much blood, sweat, tears and money in it.
So I would like to say thank you for taking it to ultimate dubs, it made my weekend
.Oh and to answer your original question, having been out in both 996's and Caymans, its a tough choice, but I think the Cayman would lose more money in depreciation, so I would factor that in. I find that the Cayman has a harsh ride, but is more nimble, rather than the 996 having more of a GT feel.

lol!! car stalker!!
I know what you mean though. Some of my mates say lower it some more, but at the end of the day, I still want to enjoy the ride and get down the lane where we live at the end of it!

Oh hell no! I know what you mean though. Some of my mates say lower it some more, but at the end of the day, I still want to enjoy the ride and get down the lane where we live at the end of it!

I vaguely remember a 964 in one of the other halls that was stupidly lowered with stretched tires and it looked awful, a classic 964 will still not look out of place anywhere from on the track to the streets of Monaco, 'slammed' with stretched tires and the only place that suits it is the local council estate
.Maybe I'm a dying breed of 'young un's' that still gets enjoyment from driving and putting function>form.

I had an 08 Cayman S and then replaced it with an 03 Turbo. I still have an 02 Boxster. While the Cayman was and Boxster is still a nice car the 996 is an easier car to get into and out of and has much better vision out.I have a 964 (and 914 if they count!??!) but both are too good to use on a daily basis (as well as getting on in years).

You need to drive examples of both but I'd lean towards the 996.
