vibration noise from under the car evident at very low speeds only. Sounds almost like exhaust is touching something and making the noise, local garage cant detect where its coming from, any ideas ? my car is 2002 3.2s boxster

You need to find a better local garage.

Does the noise follow the engine speed or road speed? If the former you need to find a better local garage *right now* and stop driving the car running the engine in the meantime.

If the noise follows the road speed then it can be a piece of something caught between the brake splash shield and rotor, a loose piece of under car panel dragging on the ground or rubbing against a tire.

It can be a heat shield come loose and dragging on the ground or rubbing against a half shaft.

And there are more possibilities: wheel bearing; CV joint bearing are two that come to mind.

But all you can do is read guesses. To find the source of the noise requires the car lifted in the air with its tires/wheels free to turn (by hand). Oh, and at a good local garage. Did I mention that?

noise/vibration only happens at speeds of up to around 15 mph and is much more noticeable when driving over uneven ground or road where there are small holes/bumps. Was told by porsche specialist that probable causes were shock absorbers and front engine mount. Both have been replaced and noise is still there

If the noise sounds like piece of tin rattling then its likely the exhaust heat shields maybe loose as others have suggested. The clips that hold these in place do perish. This happened to my Box and my Indi sorted straight away. However, as I drove away I noticed the rattling was still there so turned straight round and took the car back to them. Turns out it was some loose excess handbrake cable rattling inside the rear near side brake drum. They stripped the brake down tightened everything up and bobs your uncle, problem fixed. Don't know if this is your problem or not, but hopefully useful to know anyway...

Thanks to everyone who have responded to my query. I will check it all out when I can and come back to let you know if the problem has been resolved. Its been with me for about a year now, time I had it fixed. If these ideas dont cure it Ive no idea what I will do next.

You can of course check the heat shields yourself quite easily. Lie down and look underneath and ***when cold*** put your hand on the heat shield (thin metal plate) and try to waggle them.

However, after putting up with such noises for a while, I had my dealer sort out the obviously loose shield on one side out only to be informed that a not too dissimilar buzzing noise could now be heard coming from within the exhaust silencer itself!. R€plac€m€nt was naturally the preferred solution - but perhaps someone could cut them open, sort out the issue(s) and weld it all shut for less (and possibly achieve an improved sound while doing so).
