Its really quite scary how expensive it is to buy/build and maintain a dedicated track car. I sat down today and worked out that the total cost of my 944 s2 race per annum is about £5K regardless of whether it is used for racing or track days using their criteria of adding up all its through life costs. Certainly makes one think and I believe now they are right about the renting option even though I never even considered it beforehand. It makes one wonder how many people have blown a lot of cash on cars only occasionally used on track when they would have been better off just renting a track car a few times a year.

BookATrack (BAT) do it but sure other track day operators will offer car rental also.

I did Anglesey in my 997T....then in a BAT Caterham R400....won't be using the Turbo around there again that's for sure !!

Caterhams rock ! Just so raw and exhilarating (even more so in the wet !) driving

I tried to keep up with a R400 around Blyton a couple of weeks ago. After 2 laps I gave up as it was all going to end up in a big exepensive mess. It's all about power to weight ratios. The bonus of low weight is reduced costs in brakes, tyres etc. If I wanted a car just for trackdays it would be a Caterham or similar.

However, if I was looking to buy such a car I would seriously consider entering into a proper budget racing championship instead such as Stock Hatch or something similar.

There's no denying that Caterhams are great track cars, but the hassle factor of having to own a suitable tow vehicle and trailer them when doing long distances takes away some of the pleasure of ownership.

Got to say renting as and when is beginning to make sense to me. A 5 hour round trip to Rockingham earlier this week on suspension that is lovely on track but less than ideal on the rest of Britain's roads given their diabolical state left me shaken rather than stirred and wondering whether it is worth bothering with anymore.

It's a lot cheaper to rebuild a Caterham than a 911 if you do have an off. I think Rich (Jackal) can attest to this, given the magnitude of his Spa incident.
