Pirelli Trofeo R's on a GT3
Discussion
So has anyone here actually tried the Pirelli Trofeo or Trofeo R on a GT3 here?
Pretty excited to try these out. I don't know anyone that has firsthand experience with them but the tyre reviews from the continent seem to rate them very highly.
Not sure why they are so hard to get hold of though, or why so few people use them as a viable alternative to the Cup tyre. Interested to hear people's thoughts.
They do look bloody good though. A big part of me wishes that they painted the logos in white or yellow to give them that F1/P1 look. Might even give it a go myself with some tyre paints.

Glenn, you'd have to assume they are better, but not had any experience with Trofeo's, so don't know, and not actually fitted them yet. Have you heard anything about Trofeo's on track?
I'll get the micrometer on the depth. They do look deeper in the photos.
Edit: sorry forgot to add, price is pretty comparable to Cups.

Heard some mixed reports really. As said, they're very soft, especially the sidewalls, they were alarmingly flexible. I'll get the micrometer on the depth. They do look deeper in the photos.

Extra depth bodes well for longevity if nothing else !

In this test, on a 911, it seems to come out pretty good.

Quite interesting that the R888, which is often considered as a better wet weather tyre than a Cup, was over 20 seconds off the pace in the wet handling.
Will be very interesting to see how they work out.

The Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyre is cheaper , easier to get hold of and by all accounts 99% like a cup tyre with better wet grip and deeper tread. The Trofeo didnt even make it onto the list when new tyres were needed but it will be interesting to hear how you rate them.I have them on my 997 GT3 at present, and like them. Wear is similar to cups. When they first hit the market I believe the compound was very soft which lead to concerns over wear, but Pirelli then made some changes to improve this. Believe that's what I read on rennlist anyway.
I've done 3 TDs so far Anglesey, and Donington twice. Tyres still have 2 - 3mm left so expect to get 4-5 TDs. Which is roughly the same as cups. Grip wise I think they are slightly better than cups, but we are talking small % . Wet grip is a lot better. Driving to the track on a wet morning I was very surprised how well they coped with stand water, unlike cup where you tend to hope and pray that you get through it.
Mine cost about 20% more than cups, so if your have a cheap supplier let us know, as I would use the trofeo again if the price was right.

When the Trofeo launched they were around 50% more expensive than Michelin Cups and by all reports of the time no better in terms of performance. They consequently didn't get any interest from the market and have been largely ignored since, with only very few people running them. They have since made them cheaper and have revised them, but unless they got to a point where they were both cheaper and better than cups I really don't see much scope for people switching to them. Personally I avoid Pirellis simply due to disillusionment over the debacle that is the availability of the N rated Corsa over the last 5 or so years (for all flavours of GT3 fitment) - I simply have no faith in the brand as a consequence.
Frankly I would be more interested to hear about the latest Dunlops... ?
