So, I've had my gen.1 Cayman S for almost two years and reckon the chances are that I'll be keeping it into next year now, so the warranty renewal is due. I've had the letter through quoting me prices for the warranty and for the 111 point check.

Has anybody done this recently, and did they get any kind of discount on either the check or the warranty? The impression I have is that I might get something on the 111 point check, but that I'll pay 'list' on the warranty - is that about right? (can't recall prices, but about £800-odd for the warranty, and £180ish for the check I think).

Cheers!

I've heard of instances when they've waived the cost of the 111 point check when combined with a service, but I think you'd be very lucky to get anything off the warranty.

I'm due a minor service in December, but renewal will be June, so a tad early for that. If it's THAT expensive I might risk it and not warranty the car, which would let me use my local indie for the service (PSR), which I'd rather do to be honest. Decisions, decisions...

Careful you don't get stung with extra checks for over-revs.

I just had my warranty renewed and had to pay £300 extra for a compression test, all because the car had 8 ignitions in rev range 3 ( which happened over 2 years ago, no idea how ).

Apparently they used to only worry about range 4 and above but now range 3 also requires extra checks.

So my 1 year warranty cost £829 + £215 ( 111 point check ) + £300!

The OPC also seemed to think rev range 1 and 2 can only be achieved by changing down too early rather than hitting the limiter. I had ignitions in range 1 only two hours before the check, and I will tell you for free I didn't miss a gear or change down too early during that time.

Really? That's ridiculous - if they wanted to do that I'd tell 'em to get stuffed I think. I've hit the limiter once or twice IIRC, but I've never shifted down early or missed a gear. Which OPC was that please? I'd be using Cambridge or, possibly, East London.

One in Wiltshire, starting with S!

They said the policy change was from the warranty company so they have to do the checks if you have range 3 or above.

I've no idea how I got any in range 3, 8 ignitions is only 1 and a bit revolutions of the engine!

They also said it is hitting lots of customers now as many cars have revs in range 3.

I recall that it might be possible to get the warranty without Porsche Assist which might bring the price down if you have breakdown cover elsewhere?

My warranty was up in March and I had the 111 check done to be told of 3 cycles in rev range 3, this occured some 600hrs ago!! Now if you work it out basing it on my average speed read out this was 2.5yrs ago and when the car had done approx 12k miles.......the engine was rebuilt at 17k miles by Porsche.....I told them to poke the warranty and I've purchased another warranty!!!

Cheers all - I'm going to mail a couple of OPCs and see what they say - I'll update this thread when I've got a few answers. With a good indie down the road, I'm tempted to get him to health check it before the warranty runs out, and then just go without the warranty. 40,000 miles and 5 years old, I reckon the IMS would have already gone if it was going to...wouldn't it?!?

Don't bet on it - the one on my 996 was done about 2 years ago at 12 years old and 85-90,000 miles - luckily it was noticed as being noisy when on the ramp, so it was replaced before it failed.

Hartech or Sports & Classic maintenance plans are your answer smile

And that's before you take the potential for bore scoring into account.

Indeed... Well, I'm going to mail some OPCs and see what comes back. S&C and Hartech are miles away from me - I'd consider it, but for the fact that I've not long since started my own business, and can ill afford to be out getting the car sorted at the moment, so it looks like OPC or nothing for me. Shame PSR don't do a maintenance scheme - though I seem to recall there was talk of them doing one.

Just to update this, Porsche Cambridge have quoted £876 inc VAT without Porsche assistance and £1045 including it - that's the 111 point check, and the warranty itself for a year (£1811 and £1536 for two years). Gonna try East London for comparison, but that sounds OK to me - also will pick up and drop off with a courtesy car, though need to book 4 weeks in advance.

I've renewed my warranty twice now the last time being 6 weeks ago. Had the inspection charge waived both times by asking nicely but can't get anything off the actual warranty cost as they say the margins are too tight. I guess they know you'll be back service/repair time so are prepared to give away something to keep your custom longer term.

Not a problem when booking in for a service. Dunno what happens if the car eats the IMS and I need a courtesy car pronto...

And yeah, I had assumed I'd get the inspection for nothing with a gentle nudge.
