996 turbo or 997 turbo?
Discussion
Hi,
A quick(ish) question for those who have owned the subject cars..............
I am currently looking at buying a 996 turbo around the 30k mark or a 997 turbo around the 50k mark but I am undecided which way to go. I certainly prefer the front end looks of the 997 but I am wondering if the 20k premium is really worth paying? Ok the 997 has more power but is it really noticeably different from the 996 in the everyday world?
Thanks in advance for any responses.

Although i am very biased i like the outside of the 996t better than the 997t but the interior of the 997 is much more modern and a nicer place to be.
I looked at changing to a 997t last year but couldnt justify the extra cash. A sports exhaust and a mild re-map will be 997 performance or you could go for the x50 or s option.

997 is newer interior, nicer place to sit, though still crap PSM and wheels look seriously crap. In standard trim not much difference in performance. 997's will take another nose dive, 996's are probably settling now. I would go 996, call Ken from 9e and get him to tweak the 996 so it can take out a 997 and most other fast cars.

The wheels on a gen 1 997t are enough to put me off (they must be amongst the worst Porsche have come up with), but then I have a 996t, so may be biased!
Have to agree I'm afraid. The 996t had lovely wheels, and then the 997t had those horrors, IMO the Gen2 where even worse.
I learned to live with them as the 997 trumps the 996 in every conceivable way.
When looking for a 996t, I quickly realised that the gap between the unloved £25k cars and the cherished, immaculate £35k cars was £10k well spent. Unfortunately this brings them close to 997 territory. I never saw a shabby 997, and indeed managed to get into a totally immaculate 997t for closer to £40k then you might imagine.
The 997 is a much better car, which is what you'd expect after several years of development. The wheels and headlights issue are just a case of personal taste. I happen not to like the wheels on my 997, but then I can't see them when I'm driving, and how they look will be the last thing on your mind when you put your foot down, I can assure you.....
Don't buy either, get yourself in a GT3.
I had a 997 turbo last year. Amazingly fast but that's about it.
Now have 996 GT3 Clubsport, 2004 Mk2 with 7500 miles only and a 3.2 cab and a new 991GT3 on order (just had Nov confirmed delivery) and getting in then swiftly out of the turbo was best thing I ever did. I wake up now and all I want to do on a sunny day is go for a blast down the country roads where we live.
My 2007 turbo is for sale at Williams Crawford in Cornwall at £46750.00 I think, 24k miles and I can vouch for it that it is mint if the 997 is what you want. I owned it since last July just didn't float my boat as the GT3 does...

All new cars are better, 997 better than 996, 991 will be better than 997 and so on... The question was 30k vs 50k, I would get a nice 996, call 9e and have them make it go quicker than a 997 and 991 for that matter. For the spare cash I would buy a 964 or 3.2.Dave Sums said:

GT3's are different, less an all round drive, more track orientated, quick on shorts and bendy stuff, but struggle more on the straights. Years back had a 6Mk1 which I stupidly handed over to another custodian. Now looking a little around for a mint 6Mk2 to sneak in the garage without upsetting the spassbremse. I had a 997 turbo last year. Amazingly fast but that's about it.

Your car was there the last time I was at 9E - loved your seats. If what you've had done to yours is less than the difference between a 996 turbo and a 997 turbo, I'll get mine done tomorrow.

I purchased a 996tt in 2005 and enjoyed it for 3 years and then I sold it to buy a 997tt in 2008 and I have never looked back!
Like people say it goes back to the original look with round headlight's and the interior is much better, it runs VTG turbos and the 4 wheel drive is different.
But that is not to say the 996tt is not a capable piece of machinery IMO it's great either way you decide to go.

Hahaha... My car is a bad example, you can buy a 996, 997, 964 and still have a cash left for If what you've had done to yours is less than the difference between a 996 turbo and a 997 turbo, I'll get mine done tomorrow.

and
The seats are now fantastic, comfy and supportive when you need it. 996 and 997 seats give no support when bends are attacked a little, so the choice was buckets or get them build up with proper support. Again not a decision made with much cash sense, but what the heck, we only live ones.

Not worth 20k more.
But it depends what floats your boat, TBH they are both tremendous cars.

This is the right answer
, your question comes up on here regularly. I had the choice last summer and decided the 996 and bought a A5 for my daily driver. I'm happy with the choice I made, the carbon fibre inside makes it a much nicer place to sit than the normal interiors3nick said:

Made the same journey three years behind you. And agree. Both great cars though.Like people say it goes back to the original look with round headlight's and the interior is much better, it runs VTG turbos and the 4 wheel drive is different.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned and (interior aside) was the first difference I noticed between the two cars was the brakes. 997 six-pots are a big step up in stopping power from the four-pots in the 996 turbo.
