I'm currently trying to get insurance for my 968 CS which I thought I'd be able to do through a classic policy since the car is over ten years old.

I only need cover for about 3000 miles PA as it's a third car, used only on occasional weekends - the problem I'm having though is that classic companies say it needs to be over 15 years old (despite advertising 10 years) and normal policies don't seem to discount much for the low annual mileage.

I'm with Direct Line for my main vehicle, they wouldn't give me a discounted second vehicle price because 'of the insurance group it's in' (how they think I can drive 2 cars at once though, irrespective of insurance group is beyond me!).

Any ideas guys?

Some insurers will cover it as a classic. maybe AON or Footman James. I got an extremely low quote from Liverpool Victoria on a normal policy - these can be mich cheaper at unlimited miles than even a classic policy!

15 is the norm for Porsches; Lotus's are classics at 10 yrs for some odd reason. Maybe they wear out quicker

Keep trying is all I can suggest. I pay more for my second car than I do my main one; it seems par for the course if the second car is exciting. Kit cars (like Caterhams) can be unfeasibly cheap for a third car insurance-wise. This is because no insurer thinks anyone is mad enough to have it as a primary vehicle.

Oh how wrong they were

If its over 10 years old you should be able to get it insured as a classic, but you'll need to go to a classic insurer. FJ are good or you could try Carole Nash, Peter Best, RH, Sureterm, Lancaster etc etc.

Insuance wise, 10 years for any car.

buying wise: as soon as a dealer needs to sell an older car!

My CS has been on a classic policy with AON since before it was 10 years old.

Cheapest quote I got for a 968CS which was about 6 months ago was I belive from AXA (altho I can barely read my own handwriting & it may have been an AXA policy via Carole Nash) 4k limited miles £520, 6k miles £680, my normal insurers (Admiral) & unlimited miles= £1000.

A Porsche becomes a classic when it can't keep up with a new one.

I'm with Lancaster insurance. (Details can be found near the back of most porsche mags.)

I have '91 944 S2 and have it insured as a classic car. I'm allowed 10k miles per annum and have it parked on the drive at a cost of £800 roughly. Not bad as I use it for my everyday car.
