Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and next week will be owning my first Porsche - (See profile picture)

I've chosen the car but yet shaken hands on a final price, but with the wealth of knowledge on this forum your help would be greatly appreciated. The spec is as follows;

2000 (W) 996 C2 - Forest Green - GT3 kit

35,000 miles on the clock (I'm a good friend of current owner for the last 5 years, only taken on a few days a year- varified and geniune) inc. previous MOT's.

Factory fitted Full GT3 Aero Kit inc Rear wing, side trims, bumper.

BBS MK1 GT3 alloys - (Rears are in need of refurb)

Sports Exhaust

Sports Suspension

Sports Seats.

No PSM/ PSE / NAV - Just basic spec.

The car is in supberb condition, I did the MOT with the garage and have had an independant inspection done with Addspeed (Porsche, Horsham). - Only trivial findings however it was mentioned slightly damp RMS but the specialist said this was nothing to worry about.

The IMS Mod hasn't been done.

It's hard to put a value on the car as there are very few comparable milage or colour 996's out there but any help with what you think I should pay for it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Dave.

Sports exhaust, but not PSE?

Condition will have a bearing. Green is a minus and if it has a brown interior too it might not help.

I'll say about £12k if it's tidy and the usual bits, RMS excepted, look ok.

The condition is supberb apart from the rear wheels needing a refurb.

The Sports Exhaust was fitted aftermarket without the PSE switch etc.

The interior is black unmarked leather with green centres on the front seats.

Thanks, he is asking fair bit more than that at the moment.

I guess its manual, so 12k sounds about right. Its the colour thats the price killer.

I too think the car is worth more than 12k. If it is superb condition then i think nearer to 14/15k.

That colour is going to be a killer. Majority of buyers simply won't touch it.

If it was a good colour with that mileage then maybe £14k but not in green.

Tell him to stick it on ebay and you'll see what it's worth precisely.

Thanks guys!

Yeah it is manual, it's not a purist colour and I was very dubious at first but it has grown on me especially when you see it in the flesh. Although yes I am worried about when I come to sell it on and will use it in the bartaring process.

However, the colour was used as an original MK1 996 GT3 colour on which the car is based upon and a very neat replica.

I could consider other options but I'm thinking a car this old - to know its history, previous owner for 5 years, how it's been cared for etc. is worth it. My friend has just brought a 21,000 mile 996 2001 similar spec car in silver for £17k (currently on PistonHeads classifieds) which says somthing. - either he was a mug or it's what it's worth?!

Its 13 years old and will never be a classic collectors car. There will always be a cloud of uncertainty over the engine, even though it may be good for many years to come.

There is always the conscience issue when buying from a mate that you want to be fair. BUT you cant pay more than the market rate so 14K is probably the absolute max that anyone would pay (a dealer would be sub 10K)

Its really a question of how much depreciation you expect to suffer during your ownership verses how much fun you are to gain from it???????

Unless you can sell it on to a mate at above market rateidea

Depreciation on 996's is still plummeting from what I can see, another 944 type depreciator?

I'm more worried about the engine going into molten than the few £k in depreciation!

But it's one of these things I have to do is own a 911 before 'she' wants a ring on her finger and wants to spit out kids, get big houses, an expensive divorce etc. which is not a patch on the smile I will have going through a tunnel spitting unleaded out..... I think the figure asked is in the £15k mark.

Picture on my profile if I've done it right.

My 2c worth is pay what you are happy to pay....

There is a lot to be said buying a 996 you know rather than one you don't.

It seems to be a UK thing to not like green - I think it looks damn nice and I had a boxster S in a similar colour.

Then again I've got a purple 996 (veusious gray).

There was a thread recently about a green GT car, turns out that a fair few people liked it. If you like it that's the only thing that matters, I'd far rather buy an immac rare coloured car with very lows miles from someone I knew had cherished it for the last 5 years, over an average car with average mileage in an average colour from someone unknown. Why not offer him 13750 and see what he says?

I own a 996 silver cab, blue leather amber manual; 63000 miles. I've owned one before and sold it. I've also bought a car from a friend. The car is without doubt nearer 12 than 15. Your mate is exploiting your friendship for an easy sale. He can easily get an idea of interest by putting it on PH at 13K. My guess is he won't get any calls. Don't pay more than that. He is making you feel obliged and he's doing you a favour when it's the other way round. Myself, I'd never dream of swapping mine for his and mine had twice the miles. Trade would offer 9K.

Thanks for the input guys, there's no exploiting of friendship going on... He payed £22k for it 4/5 years ago and from what I've seen over the last few months 25-40k miles 996's go for £14-18k putting his in the middle.

He is helping me out with payments which accounts for somthing - not a one lump sum cash deal.

I'm willing to pay a little more for a cherished looked after example which this is, but don't want to be mugged by offering way over the odds. What does anyone think of it seeing it in the picture?

I think Porsches are hard to sell in green...

For around 15k you could have this from the classifieds:

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/p...

Anything more than 13k for a green car with green seat inserts and no nav, etc. is nuts in my opinion. After 5 years owing it, if he's retained half its value then he's done pretty well in general car terms...

Put it this way - if you didn't know the owner, would you even be looking at a green one?

If I didn't know the owner I wouldn't even consider buying an old 996 911 at all; because to find an honest sale with a known history, low milage is nigh on impossible.

That mk 2 silver one is very nice however I want the GT3 kit and wing on it, to me it's what makes a Porsche 911.

I quite like the colour too. 11k sounds good. Might be worth 12k, but he's your mate, he should do you a deal!

Incidentally, you mentioned making payments on it which may indicate you have no contingency fund. Are you really sure you want to be buying a 10+ year old 911? Might sound harsh, but if the purchase price is not affordable, you probably don't want to touch it with a barge pole.
