Cayman S or Cayman?
Discussion
Hi all - just new to the site - looking for some assistance/advice. Am currently looking to buy 1st Porsche. Have a budget of about £30000. Have researched Cayman S & Base & am aware of Generation 1 & 2. Would appear budget will buy younger Base model - obviously a lot of things to consider - PDK, spec, mileage etc. My annual mileage will be 7-8000. Because of the value involved, I will probably purchase from OPD with their 2 year warranty. Any help would be greatly appreciated - Thanking You.
I would definitely recommend a Gen II car, either the 2.9 or 3.4S at a stetch with you budget. A quick look showed only 2 PDK Caymans and 6 manuals, both 2.9s. There are no Gen II cars under £30k but 13 at £30-35k
It's purely a peace of mind thing as there have been issues with the Gen I engines, both 2.7 amd 3.4.
A bit of haggling should get you into a Gen II S. Great cars, I should know...

As Bubbles said not a huge choice. I bought mine last week - 2010 Cayman S, PDK, full leather, sat nav. It had 19k miles and warranty till Dec 2015. Cost £34k at Porsche Swindon. At the time nothing in the OPC network came close to that price/spec combination. I think perhaps the colour wasn't the most popular -GT Silver - but works for me.
It's my first Porsche - impressed so far. Amazed that I got 36mpg driving it back to Lancashire!

Cheers - had a test drive last week in PDK S - very impressed with the engine. I currently have a 530d & it wouldn't come close. Would appear good spec - 19" wheels/heated seats & steering wheel/park assist/PCM 3.0/sound package plus/sport chrono plus/26500 miles/3 year old/white. Lovely car - I intend keeping it several years & would have preferred less mileage. £34000 - thinking of stretching the budget. Am taking S manuel out tomorrow to compare to PDK.
Ian - both would appear quite similar - this was also originally a demo & then privately owned for 28 months. Have been on Porsche UK site - it's the mileage that I would prefer a bit less - I know it only works out 8000 per year, but I might consider less spec for less mileage. My main requirements would be 19" wheels/park assist/PCM 3.0 - anything else a bonus. Cheers.
Depends on what POV you're coming from. If you want to drive spiritedly and are not concerned with how fast it is in comparison to other cars. Then you can use more of the performance more of the time in a 2.7/2.9. However if you want thrust without the effort, then the 3.4 is the way to go.
FWIW, there are a lot less problems reported with the 2007-2009 2.7's so don't rule them out as you'll get more car for your cash. I'm not even sure if any have actually been reported with IMS failure... They just seem to get bundled up with the pre-2009 3.2/3.4's. The very first 2.9's were a little prone to bore scoring I believe, but I think that this was sorted fairly quickly.
Spec-wise it comes down to what you want. If you want to drive and don't really care for toys, a low spec car will do that just as well as one with all the bells and whistles.
If you insist on running bigger wheels on a pre-2009 car, consider getting one with PASM as the standard suspension with the big wheels results in a somewhat harsh ride. 2009 cars are better. If you're going PDK, you'll be looking at 2009+ anyhow. As has been mentioned, if you go PDK, get the flappy paddle wheel as the standard wheel is counter intuative and also make sure it's got sport chrono as it's crippled without it.

Once you have driven the S, I doubt you would consider the base car. Especially coming from a BMW diesel that has plenty of torque. My personal situation is that I have Cayman gen II in manual, with just the right amount of spec in a manual. My DD has DSG, therefore it is nice to jump into a manual at the weekends!
Good man-nice position to be in. Thinking manuel will be the way to go-unfortunately this 1 I'm test driving today is not going to be a purchase-too old/high mileage-just trying it to compare manuel/PDK. As I said earlier, would like very low mileage car-however just checked, PDK I drove last week has 23600 miles/good spec/£34000.
Wouldn't get too hung up on miles with these cars - there's a fair variation out there, and they can take it easily - condition, condition, condition (and spec). Gen.II S would be my choice, though once you start pushing the budget, I'd be interested to see what Cayman Rs are out there - I suspect a bit too far in terms of budget though.
Hi Brian,
I have a 2011 Gen 2 S manual (purchased 2nd hand through Porsche in September), and love it. Couple of things you might like to consider that I like on mine - PASM and the standard 18 inch S wheels. This combo gives you a great ride/handling balance for the daily driver part of your usage, but is still plenty aggressive enough in Sport mode for track work etc. Depends if you're set on the looks of the 19s, but the ride height drop with PASM helps remove some of the wheel arch gaps... I tried PDK and manual and found the manual more fun more of the time. PDK great in maximum attack mode or pootling in town though.
Other spec on mine - Bose (nice enough), Full Leather (makes the interior look much nicer IMHO), Nav (good), 6 disc changer, rear wiper (handy), voice control (not necessary), multi-function wheel (handy), sports seats (excellent), rear parking sensors, Aqua blue (I like it a lot
)
Popular things I'm missing - Xenons and heated seats - I can live without both
Good luck with the search.

Hi folks-just had a drive in manuel Gen 1-they don't have manuel Gen 2. Found gear selection bit "ropey" selecting couple of gears-car was 2006 with 66000 miles. Was wondering if Gen 2 gearbox be any different. All replies gratefully accepted.
The manual change on a Cayman/Box doesn't get much better. Suggest the one you drove may have been in need of some adjustment or cable replacement given the mileage. Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
