Depends on who you talk to. Some say that you get better light from the "Extra Plus" type ranges of bulbs from Bosch, Halfords, etc...
From what I can see on the specifications, unless you actually increase the wattage of the bulbs (which is illegal and potentially dangerous) they all push out the same amount of light in lumens. The only difference is how finely focused the beam is as the more expensive bulbs compress the filaments into a smaller space which causes the mean time to failure to reduce from 2000+ hours to 200 hours.
Upgrading to HID Xenon bulbs is technically possible but again illegal as they will not be self-levelling or have headlamp washers.
Personally, I go for the heavy duty bulbs that have the same output in lumens but have a rated 4000+ hours running time. After all, nothing is worse than a blown bulb at night.
