I have reservations for a number of reasons about Guards Red cars, the biggest one being memories of other people's faded cars.

Do Guards Red Porsches suffer?

Not the modern day ones (generally 993 model 911's and onwards for example) as they're all clear coated.

I understood that it was only in the days of painting cars with the top paint coat exposed to the elements that caused the disastrous fading of old.
The new method of top coat being clear cost I thought prevented to a large extent.

Or maybe I dreamt that ?

ETA , ah, ClarkPB above ^ has just confirmed my dream

Still fades a bit. It's because the red pigment in the paint slowly oxidises when exposed to sunlight etc. Not sure the clearcoat is a 100% solution?

Should be fine in the UK then.

All models from the 996 onwards had a base colour and clear top coat.

The paint composition is completely different to the solid colours used on older cars.

I have a 13 year old guards red 996 and the front bumper still matches the rest of the car after 2 resprays. (and no special colour matching was involved)

Obviously, all paint needs to be looked after but I believe that pink matt finish that guards became after years of weathering is a thing of the past.

I own a 04 guards red 996 and the paint looks like new. No discolouring anywhere.

A good, regular hard wax or sealant should stop this happening shouldn't it? smile

I thought it was just old vauxhalls that suffered from the paint fade? I have seen a green car with quite faded paint (also a vauxhall and i think it would be classed as a mk 1 corsa so of that era that a previous poster mentioned).

I have never seen a modern porsche suffer from this. Only Porsche I have ever seen with this was a 30 year old 944!

Ahem! My old girl was only 21 when I got her!

She was in an appaling state when I got her, but regular clay bar and polishing would sort her out:

Currently looks like the back, not the front. Wash then claybar? Nothing more aggressive than that?

Right, we need a Guards Red Rejuvination thread to keep track of the best results and processes.

I would wash it and then for the first spring clean would use a liquid claybar followed by Zymol cleaning polish and then colour magic to seal it, that would take 4-5 hours

I would then follow it up monthly with the Zymol followed by the Colour Magic over the summer, which would take 2-3 hours, if I washed it more often I would just whip over with colour magic in an hour.

Have fun Simon!

Nope my 968 sport went pink! Not too hard to get back and keep on top of though.

It would seem that Porsche sorted this from the 996 and boxster onwards. Apparently, they diverted money from the engine development budget.
