Hello to all - can you help,

Has anyone experienced a rattle from the rear nearside? It is a metallic noise that occurs on every journey but can be heard more when driving over the speed camera markings or the rumble strip on the motorway, don't ask! It's as if its coming from the area of the rear quarter directly behind the passengers ear.

My thought was that the shocker is moving in the top cup but it isn't in this area. I am a qualified tech, some time back. So i am reasonably handy around a car, but I am sure some disagree!

The car has been into the local dealer and they wanted £400 diag time to start with. Sorry but this is a bit steep. Can you help..............please!

Sounds like your heat shield has become loose. Not serious but get it checked.

It's not the heat shield. I have already secured them...annoying as they are.

The noise sounds like it is coming from in the car, but i know this is impossible.

The exact location is somewhere under the rear arch around the shocker area, i have checked this with the engine bay cover removed. but i still cannot locate it!!!

Is it possible it's coming from inside the muffler? I had a loose baffle (or it was the inner "double skin" of the muffler touching the outside of the muffler? - something like that) on my 996 that sounded exactly like a rattle.

Dealer had to replace the whole muffler after 2 or 3 attempts to spot weld it up.

It only showed up at certain revs, whereas yours might be there all the time, in which case forget my idea.

Hi David

It's definitely a suspension rattle but as we all know, getting to this area is a problem. Especially on the Boxster!

As i have said earlier, the noise is really high up where the suspension meets the chassis. I have removed all this and rebuilt back up but with no joy.

Perhaps I just dropped a 10mm bolt somewhere

Thanks
