Can anybody tell me how long this engine has been in production
and does it have the same engine problems as the older Boxsters.

My car is coming to the end of the 2 year warranty and debating
if to renew the warranty for another 2 years.

I understand it's the 987.2 DFI engine in Cayman S spec. So no IMS to worry about.

^ Yup. Personally I wouldn't bother (brother who has one didn't).

It apparently doesn't suffer the issues of earlier engines.

I didn't take any extension.

I renewed my warranty and about two weeks later the steering column adjuster broke - they said it would cost >£1,000 due to complexity of replacing. I was glad I had the warranty, which cost £1,600 for two years. I'm still £600 down but a long way to go.

What's the total cost for the 2 years?

Blonde? I wish! I am going greyer by the day!

Ok, so £800 per year. On a car that new, I would renew.

Essentially we're saying that we have less faith in these German made premium cars than cheap everyday runabouts. Impressive isn't it?!

Mine is in tomorrow morning and I am renewing.

On balance, I think it's the best decision at this stage.
