How much should I be expecting to pay for a 996 Turbo alternator supplied and fitted? I've always used OPC for repairs so far, has anyone had their alternator done in OPC recently? How much did you pay? Any other prices from indy's for the same job?

I said " has anyone had their alternator done at OPC recently ", it's not a guessing game. I guess I use my car more than you, you still on your first alternator?

And I hope it is a lot less than that. smile

Cheers, I might have a look tomorrow and see if I want to do it in the drive. Weather permitting if course.

PSM, ABS, PCM and airbags all failed about 60 seconds after I got the alternator warning. I might try and start it again and plug the Durametric in first, see what it says?

Euro Car Parts have recon units from £260 nett upwards.

You'll have to remove your own and exchange it to have the surcharge refunded.

It should be around 3-4 hours labour and any competent mechanic could do it - use your local garage if you trust them.

If you use an OPC you could end up paying close to or over 4 figures

If you're at all handy you could do it yourself

Are you sure it's the alternator? The voltage regulator is a common failure on these cars.

I was about to say it would probably be the regulator. About 5 mins to swap once you have the alternator off.

Same symptoms as a failed alternator I.e not charging battery, when battery gets so low all abs/PSM failure lamps register on dash.

The regulator is located at the back of the alternator so you'll have to remove it anyway but it's a £25 part rather than a £3-400 part for a refurb alternator.

I had this a couple of months ago. A new regulator was under 50 quid from Woods, and it took me about 3 hours to dismantle everything, remove the alternator, swap the regulator, and put everything back. That was going really slowly, as it was my first foray into the 996's engine bay.

Thanks guys, I think I'll try the voltage regulator first. I'll order a new one and replace it next weekend. smile

Take it out and take it to your local auto electrics shop. They will test it for you and quote for a replacement from various manufacturers. They will also recondition your existing one for about £100.

My alternator was out recently as a result of an AOS replacement and I had it reconditioned at the same time.

Alternator is out, voltage regulator swapped, just to build it back up. smile

FYI, Bosch have updated the part number for the voltage regulator, and I've been assured it is the same part. Part number is now

F 00M 144 136 - 395.
