Hi all

Well I'm back into pre '89 motoring (as well as the 993....don't really know how I got it past the wife...still hurrahh) and I'm looking to replace my whale tail for a smooth lid (I shall of course keep the old tail to revert it to standard) and have had a bit of scout around ebay but no luck. Can any body recommend a breaker, not DVB, or point me in the right direction, and any idea how much I should pay?

Cheers

Well you might remember it from 911v recently, velvet red cab...not the turbo which I'm assured is going to be something else. Got Chris Weaver (Excel wheels)coming out today to get the wheels sorted then its a summer of cruising!! Love being back in a oldie worldie porker, I had a black '89 coupe a few years back (hence the moniker) and missed the whole classic pork gig. Even had 2 waves at the weekend around Windsor from a 993 RS and a boggo 997!!

Photos once the wheels are done.

Any clues for a smooth lid?

Unbolt the whale tail, fill the holes and paint the lid, fit a plain grille (I have one kicking around somewhere - no idea what it's worth though).

Hi Goose

I hear you but want to be be to quickly switch back to standard if need be, so a second lid is my preferred method

After a few weeks of waiting, a pal of mine picked a flat lid for his 3.2 on eBay for £100. Got it painted by a local bodyshop and jobs a good un with original whale tail stored for future.
You could try Porschapart or even Ninemeister - you never know what they have lying around!

Might also be worth trying Pro9, they do a lot of modding and so have bits left over and are very well priced, got some stuff from them myself.

...hi there...sorry to bring up a old topic to the top but I've been offered a 993 lid, and being a bit of a numpty will this fit an '89 car, (I realise I'd have to take out the automatic wing)...

Sorry for the dumb question

I don't think the 993 lid would fit, certainly what I was told when looing for a 964 lid to go on my old 3.2, but I could be wrong. I know that's not much help but that's my take on it.

Have you looked on Ebay, there's a couple for sale from the USA at the mo. Just search 'porsche engine lid' and you'll find them no problem. HTH.

I don't think the 993 would work without a lot of work. Second hand flat lids come up for £200 upwards on ebay. Mine was primed and painted, and new grill fitted (around £90). Here is it half way through the job - car looks so much better without the whaletail and big weight saving too.

A 993 lid will definately not fit, sorry.

The tail lights/reflector on a 993 are angled inwards, rather than being upright like on 964 and earlier - so the engine lid is a bit shorter to compensate.

You may be lucky but you're probably looking at £300+ for an original flat lid (not one with holes filled) and grill.

I have one that's been sitting in my cupboard waiting for my next 3.2 Carrera (along with the 7 & 9" Fuchs)! biggrin

Got a headache, so please go easy.

I have seen the 964 auto rise and fall lid be made to fit.
There was a thread on it on impact bumpers.

Oh and BTW: have a look on impact bumpers, they always have parts for sale.

Yep, a direct swap, only thing you need to change are the lid hinges.

I have a pair of brand new unused hinges sat in my garage whistle

You cannot beat the flat lid look on a 3.2. It just makes the car IMHO. So much nicer than the whale tail / tea tray.

Get a f/g one - the fit/finish of the EB motorsport item is supposed to be very high

Quite partial to the flat lid look myself:
