Having had an entertaining experience of trying to sell my 996 3.4 over the last week I was wondering how others have got on?
I've had the usual "your cars worth £6K but I'll give you £7K", no thanks. But at the other end I've had 2 people turn up with full asking price in cash in their pockets to be told by one party that he didn't think that 3.4 996's were "that quick" and for another lady to explain to me that she loved the look of the car but found it too scary to drive before making her apologies and disappearing into the sunset!
Is there something that I've missed, ok the 996 isn't fast in todays world but it's still got 300Bhp, what do people expect?
Should I be surprised or is this just par of the course when selling 911's?

I had no issues selling my 3.4 1996 Coupe Tip 4 months ago.

It was very well looked after, all the usual issues had been done (suspension, discs & pads, rads, service, wheel refurb and I priced it sensibly.

Was advertised for less than a week and a really nice guy came up on the train after long conversations, transferred the money in my lounge on the web and drove away.

Could have sold my Spyder a few times over. Easiest car I have ever sold - that said, my old Spyder took an age!

Sold my 968 last month without too much hassle. If the car is priced right and you're a little patient the buyer will come along.

I wouldn't be too disheartened, at least you've had a fair bit of interest for the first week, 3 persons have been in touch already & it only takes one person to buy it and they'll be along shortly no doubt! That's the best way to approach private sales I think, otherwise you'd just see it as the frightful ballache it really is!

Thanks for the replies. In all fairness I'm not too disappointed in the response to my ad just more surprised that people have come to see the car and then concluded that its too fast for them. It's still a 911 after all albeit not a new one.

As a shameless plug here's my email ad:

If it doesn't sell it not the end of the world just mean my other half will need to wait a bit longer for a new kitchen!

I had a German dealer offer me top money for my 911 two days ago. I said no because its my dream car, and I would never be able to buy another one.

They have gone up in value far to much.

It maybe a shout but I tried selling my old 987S through a specialist in Edinburgh and I wasn't a great experience. Finished up selling it myself and pocketed £3000 more than I would have through the specialist. Being where I live does seem to be a problem, most of the calls I've had so for are from parties hundreds of miles away. In fairness it took me a long time to find a good 996 with a LSD and I had to travel to get it so hopefully someone else will do the same. Like I said earlier it's not much of a hardship having a Porker in the garage should it not sell.

I am probably missing something here but why are 996s so cheap? That is a lot of car for not much money.

That's a nice looking original 996 with a good spec and low mileage!
Have you tried advertising it anywhere else? - PistonHead classifieds perhaps?
As an enthusiast that's the first place I would look if I was buying.

Thanks for the heads up. I've actually got it on pistonheads but I've found from past experience that ebay tends to get a wider exposure. The last few cars that I've sold have been advertised on both sites but for some reason ebay has had the best results. Cracks my wife up mind you, I've not kept any car for more than 14 months in the last 6 years. I may have an illness.

I am currently looking for a 996, I have seen plenty around considerably cheaper. The problem is the engine issues are well known and due to age of the cars now an extended Warranty is no longer an option.

I am factoring the fact that potentially whatever one I buy will need a 5k engine rebuild

I am currently about to offer someone 8k, has higher mileage granted but (not wanting to offend) in my opinion its a much nicer looking car than yours.

I spoke to the guy last night and he has had absolutely no interest and its been up for sale for weeks.

There is also another one (with a vile carbon fibre wrap) which still hasnt been sold at 7k.I know the wrap will put most off but its easy enough to get re-wrapped or removed.

I'd say its priced roughly about right. M030 and LSD are hugely desirable, and quite rare, options.

Be patient and the right buyer will come along soon.

Agree with the comments about advertising on here. Enthusiasts don't seek out specialist cars on ebay.

I think you'll find that you get what you pay for. I looked at plenty of £8-9k car before I bought mine and being blunt they all needed in excess of at least £5k spent on them to bring them up to a reasonable standard. The important thing for me when buying this car was the LSD option. Ive owned several Porsches in the past without a LSD without thinking too much about it until I drove a friends which had one which, when driven hard makes a huge difference to the experience.

All to their own but I'd be careful buying any sub £10k 996. You may find a good car with a desperate seller but from my own experience it was more the case of the cars being desperate.
