Mysterious Engine Number
Discussion
This about the engine number on my 2003 Carrera.
The number is: M96/03 AT 665******. Knowing that the 665 prefix refers to an engine made in 2005/2006 I asked Porsche UK to enlighten me. They tell me that the original engine in my car had the number M96/03 663***** which, from the 663 prefix, is consistent with an engine fitted in 2003. Therefore, my 2003 car had a different engine fitted sometime in late 2005/early 2006 with the Number M96/03 AT 665*****. However, Porsche claim to have no knowledge of this changeover.
Porsche would not confirm the original engine number fact in writing without receiving a fee of £65 claiming that it would be a legal document.
I also asked Porsche UK what the "AT" stands for in my 2005/2006 engine number. I found it really interesting that Porsche UK had no idea what the "AT" stands for, allegedly claiming its presence as a complete mystery. Now we know that "AT stands for: Austausche, which means exchange in German. I have asked Porsche UK to seek information from a higher authority in Germany. However, I am unlikely to receive a letter unless I pay for it.
Why is Porsche UK unable/reluctant to answer my simple question about "AT" in the engine number? Is it through ignorance of what it stands for, or are there other reasons? Has anyone else come across "AT" in their engine number?
Despite the mystery, I still love the car and especially as it has a newer engine than I thought at first.
