Should the car move off from stationary in 2nd gear rather than 1st or is this a fault?

Generally 1st when cold or on a steep (up)hill start. Once warm, 2nd is perfectly normal unless you've been driving hard in 'D' & you may find it'll drop into first at a junction. 986s and 997s were/are the same.

Any ideas why it does this? Surely 1st gear gives you a better start off the line?

For the 6 turbo the handbook says something like "when pulling away in 1, use a healthy amount of throttle". Don't know why, but I can see that if you were to do that a lot in a built up area, you'd either be drag racing off the front of the lights or driving into the rear of the car in front a lot.

If this is the Mercedes tiptronic unit, it's so you can get a clean getaway in snowy conditions. It's the default setting since there is no winter switch in the 911 but the shifts seem faster than the unit in Mercedes cars (programming?).

For the 996 turbo, maybe the 'healthy throttle' is to help spool up the turbos.

I would also avoid accelerating hard from 2nd gear, possible bore scoring.
