Which Turbo Exhaust...again !
Discussion
I know there are a couple of Exhaust threads doing the rounds at the moment but as one is a resurrected 5 year old thread and I didn't want to hijack Bill's Tip thread, I thought I would start my own with my own unique requirements.
Having owned my manual 996 Turbo for 3 years now and having just come out of a Porsche warranty, I am itching to do a few mods.
The first mod on my list is an exhaust. Firstly, I should say that I am not planning on doing any ECU mods as I want to keep it standard.
My key priority for an exhaust is:
1. No drone/resonance in the cabin at motorway/cruising speeds
2. Not too loud at low revs, so as to keep the neighbours happy
3. Exhaust note
Also, I don't want the hassle/issue of dealing with warning lights therefore I assume I should only be looking at 200 cell systems ?
I have been listening to a number of exhausts on Youtube but it is difficult to:
a) Get a feel for the external sound in real life
b) Tell if there is droning/resonance inside
Also, from reading various threads, I get the impression that Tip cars are more susceptible to droning/resonance than manuals - is that correct ?
The ones I think I have narrowed it down to are:
- Europipe Stage 1 Quiet (this is a 100 cell system but their website says they have never had any warning light issues)
http://www.europipe.be/exhausts.html
- Cargraphic Sport (they do a version with a flap control system - has anyone tried this ? Also, what is the difference between normal Vs TUV version ?)
http://www.cargraphicts.com/index.php?id=120430&am...
- Fabspeed Maxflo Version 3 Sport (not sure how this differs in drone/exhaust note to their Supersport X-pipe version)
https://www.fabspeed.com/996TT_X50_GT2.html
- Carnewal M&M Sport (this looks interesting but no detail on cats. Is this the same as the Cargraphic ?)
http://www.carnewal-europe.com/cpx_p96026.htm
- Tubi (a friend has this on their Tip 996T and it is a little drony/resonant in the cabin. Would it be different on a manual?)
http://www.championmotorsport.com/product-p/tubi-9...
I also considered the Speedtech and Milltek but these are both 100 cell systems so I have ruled them out. Also, the Milltek needs a remap according to their website.
The 9E Exhaust also sounds good and I like the idea of the flaps but again, it is a 100 cell system
The Europipe and Tubi seem to be the most popular systems but ideally, it would be good to hear some of these in real life but it seems quite difficult.
Quite a few questions here as well as looking for some advice. Any help and pointers appreciated.

I see your in London, as am I (north), and I have a tubi on my manual 996t if you want to hear it.
Paul.
Thanks Paul, I am also in North London.Paul.
As I said, I have been in a Tip with a Tubi and it sounded a little boomy to me with some resonance cruising at around 3k revs. Do you find any resonance/boominess from your one given it is a manual ?

We (9E) can do you a 200 cell version. Usually we supply them with the 100 cell as they maxamise flow when having a tuning package, but if you just want the exhaust, then we'll do a 200 cell cat.

It's a very personal thing, but I'm ok with it, my wife isn't! Might change my mind after approx 1300 mile trip planned this weekend to Scotland and back.As I said, I have been in a Tip with a Tubi and it sounded a little boomy to me with some resonance cruising at around 3k revs. Do you find any resonance/boominess from your one given it is a manual ?

When you say tuning package, are you referring to an ECU remap all the full blown turbos, divertor valves etc ?
What would the back pressure be on your exhaust with 200 cell cats ?
Also, what kind of heat shielding comes with the exhaust ?

200 cells is of course slightly more restrictive than 100 cells - we have done this only when the customer has insisted on 200 cell.
Our exhaust now has a 60% bypass on open mode on the 996 Turbo and 40-45% on the 997 Turbo. No one else offers this, so effectively all gases go through the cats regardless. Once through either 100% goes through the silencer, or only 40% (996 turbo variant) goes through the silencer. The difference in performance can be demonstrated using our 9e17 car. With all the gases going through the silencer it takes 20 seconds to 300kph. When open it runs 17 seconds. That demonstrates how much of an impact an exhaust has on performance.
We have only one silencer option - it took me three days with our exhaust manufacturer changing the silencer, refitting and testing to produce one that has zero drone without sacrificing performance and sound. We can run a quieter exhaust, but frankly with the switchable option, you have the best of both worlds.
Ken
p.s. when we saying tuning package, it means it incorporates other hardware such as intercoolers etc. We don't do remaps.

Thanks Paul. My wife doesn't like my car now and it is totally bog standard so I don't imagine adding an exhaust will make any difference

From your response, can I assume that it does drone/boom a little but you "are OK with it" ? or are you just referring to the general 'noise' it makes

Ken - I sent you an email query on Monday about the switchable 9E exhaust.
I'm not trying to hassle you; I just want to make sure that the email got through.

Just to clear up about 100 cell exhausts giving cell lights. The CEL is caused if the cat is not working within parameters. There are different 100 cell cats, costing from £50 to £350 each. A 100 cell cat can be different even from the same manufacturer depending on what "hp" you are aiming for.
Many exhausts that are 100 cell don't give CEL lights because they use top quality cats that do not degrade after a short period of time.
It is a similar situation with MOT regulations - if the silencer is packed with material that say disappears 6 months down the line, then you are also going to have issues.
An exhaust that is cheap, is cheap for a reason.

I've just had a Speedtech 2.5 fitted to my 996 turbo S, and I've had no issues at all with check engine lights during a 1000 mile round trip to Le Mans. I imported it myself from John at Speedtech, and had it fitted by Nine Excellence. It sounds lovely, not too loud when bimbling, but much more interesting when you're pressing on! There is a teeny drone around 2000 rpm, but nothing at 80mph in 6th, so no problems cruising the autoroutes.
Ken's switchable system looks great if you want the best of both worlds, but it's obviously a bit more pricey than a simple non-switchable exhaust. You need to decide where your priorities lie, as the costs can vary quite a lot between a £2000 Speedtech or Milltek, up to a much more expensive Tubi, Europipe or even Akropovic. I will say that the workmanship on Ken's looks excellent based on the engine I saw on a hoist, but then My Speedtech doesn't look too shabby either

Thanks for your feedback on the Speedtech Pete. That did look interesting but I am a little worried about the 100 cell cats. Your car has the X50 pack which interestingly, some people recommend the 100 cell systems over the 200 cell for those.Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
