Videos from yesterday's wet Donnington

Hi there

Had an awesome track day at Donnington yesterday even though it was very wet, almost a river running across the old hair pin. So my gamble of leaving the cup tyres on hoping it would dry it did not pay off as it was very wet and never did dry out. Anyway some videos:-

My mate came in his EVO who was determined to be faster than me in the wet because our last visit to Donnington was in the dry and he could not keep up, so he was hoping the wet would turn the tables, so watch the battle here:-

As you can see we were very closely matched in the wet, when he let me pass after 5 laps I'd only manage to pull away by the full length of the pit straight, so not much but definetely quicker just. His car is an EVO 8 FQ-400. On the PSS I'd have pulled away even more as the cups were lacking for outright grip in such conditions, but their feedback was superb and hence I could drive so close to the limits and the cars balance was perfect.

Had a great fight with an R34 GTR Vspec as well running big horsepower, but again through the corners and under breaking I was quicker, I was about to him let pass but then he lost it and slowed down.

So yeah it felt good yesterday to drive a RWD car on cups in a tidy manner and show the 4WD boys how it's done, though it took immense concentration, so how the F1 drivers do it for 2hr solid is some achievement as after 30-40 minutes I was feeling frazzled.

If it's wet on July 10th I shall be putting the Pirelli's on as they are much better in the wet.

It's a track day, you can take anything on, I once took an old 525i SE round, a 1996 one with 200k+ miles and it was a right laugh.

Doubtful I was at the tyre limits of grip in such conditions, especially being on worn cups with only 2mm on the rears in such conditions.

End of the day behind the EVO I was doing 1:38 laps, when my mate in the EVO moved over to let me in front I pulled away slowly and lap time reduced to 1:34 in such conditions.

So AWD did not help the EVO in the corners, you can see me gaining in corners, only on some corner exits the AWD gets the EVO out the corner quicker, but the rear engine layout of the 911 means I too can get on the power quite well.

If I'd have being running PSS with good tread I'd be quicker than what having AWD would do for me.

Good to see you out on track again Andrew. At least the rain at Donington wasn't as bad as the deluge on the A50 that we had to put up with on the way home!

This Donington track day was stopped eventually as the braking zone at the end of the straight + most of the esses had filled up with water
- a video from a slightly dryer part of the day, on just about legal A048's.. watch the Elise on wets fly past later on in the vid..

I don't think your cups would have coped in that water - my car was jumping sideways as we went across the various streams running over the track.

of course, for really wet, that Sean Edwards nordschleife video takes some beating - very very scary..

The track was not quite that wet, but not far off, if you watch my first video you can see its absolutely hammering it down. The thing is its probably down to the fact its a 911 and the Michelin tyres, it has superb mechanical grip and the Michelins give immense feedback. Drive back on the A50 was unsettling the cups over 60mph, so I drove back at 50mph to be safe on the A50.
