Over revs in range 4 are they a worry?
Discussion
Guys
The 997 turbo I've seen this morning had 23 ignitions in range 4 about 20 hours ago is the an issue?
OPC said they will warranty the car if it passes the compression and leak down tests.
It's had 0 in ranges 5 and 6 btw.
They way I see it is if OPC give it a clean bill and a warranty I'm all good right?

It's not a worry if they warranty it but what happens when you come to sell; a prospective buyer will ask the same question you are but you aren't Porsche and therefore can't provide the same assurance.
Negotiate on the price or just pass; there are and will be more examples out there without question marks over the rev ranges.....

I think you're either scare-mongering or more likely don't understand the data. That engine has done a total of under 12 revolutions at 8,500, 9,000 or 9,500 or whatever the range 4 threshold is, so well under one tenth of a second (0.08sec @ 9,000rpm).Negotiate on the price or just pass; there are and will be more examples out there without question marks over the rev ranges.....
To the OP, if there are more than 23 ignitions in range 3, more in range 2 than 3 and likewise more in range 1 than 2 then it all makes sense (likely a VERY slightly early downshift) - if the numbers don't follow that format then it's impossible for it to happen & could be a software glitch.

Not scare mongering and do understand the data as I went through exactly the same scenario before. I don't personally think its anything to worry about, but only when Porsche provide clarity over this, will people relax a little. The fact that the rev ranges can be used in warranty claims only exacerbates the paranoia. I repeat, not a problem now, but might be when you come to re-sell. Unless of course you part-exchange with Porsche, in which case you get squeezed on price anyway.
Best to move on if you have the patience.
Thanks for all the comments guys,
Yep the car has most ignitions in RR1 around 2000 or so and down to about 23 in RR4, and 0 in R5 and R6.
TBH if it passes all the other inspection points and they slap an OPC non-conditional warranty on it I am very tempted as the rest of the car seems mint, I would not be selling it on privately anyway so probably P/X for another make of car in about 24 months unless of course i like it sooo much that I decide to hold on to it.

Upto range 4 can also occur from remaps raising the rev limit too. Some remaps increase the limit to just shy of 8000rpm, this could trigger range 4.
If the OPC are prepared to put a warranty on it (after the mandated tests) then you have nothing to worry about.
However, when I spoke to an OPC a little while ago about cars breaching Rev Range 4 and higher they explained it was unusual for Porsche to warranty the cars (and therefore to sell them) as permission had to be given by Porsche GmbH…

Bought a 997 Turbo last year from OPC which had been into RR4
Car had been px'd by previous owner with the RR4 on it.
OPC did the usual compression and oil tests before accepting car as a trade in.
Car was given clean bill of health and a 2yr warranty put on it.
Was a bit anxious about buying so took advice from various people who put my mind at ease.
16 months later car has been perfect and not missed a beat.
After the warranty has expired will put another 2yr warranty on it.
Hope this helps your decision............
