GTPorsche Track Evening Last Night 2/7/13
Discussion
Got back late last night from an impromptu track evening at Brands yesterday.
It's been the first real chance to get my 996.2 GT3 on a dry(ish) track since I had a load of work done on it.
I had the dampers refurbed, RSS rear toe links, new lower control arms, RSS monoball inner pickups and solid caster pucks front and rear on the new arms, Cup Diff and a full geo, ride height and corner weighting done. Plus some new disc and RS29's on the front and fluid.
Mike at Sports and Classic did an amazing job on the work and set up. The car feels so much sharper all around, but particularly on the nose. You can really tell that all the rubber has been taken out of the arms. A couple of passengers commented on the lack of apparent understeer in the car. I have to say I really like the balance. It may be a bit too soft at the front and oversteery for some, but I really like it.
Also very very impressed with the Pirelli Trofeo R tyres. I was worried that they were going to be a bit snappy but they were really progressive on the quickly drying track. It was nice to be able to hook up a load of laps without having to worry about them going off. The car was out for pretty much an hour and a half with literally just stops to drop off and pick up passengers.
Another surprise was how good Brands was. Due to the distance from me and the shortness of the Indy circuit it had never really appealed. But I needed a fix and this fitted in with my schedule. I have to say I'll definitely be back. Absolutely loved the place.
As always, the car soaked up the 550 mile round trip with ease and in relative comfort for such a focused and capable track car.
I just love this thing.

Pics please!
I have just recently installed RSS semi solid engine mounts and tech 9 top mounts on my 997.1 GT3 and the difference is amazing, I can only imagine what your mods must feel like on an already lighter and 'dartier' car than mine. The tech 9 top mounts are giving me a little extra negative camber (now running -2,0 was -1,4) and this feels loads better too!
I cant stop 'fiddling' with my car and now I am thinking of installing the RSS lower control arms, dog bones and top links in order to remove all slack from the front end. Amazing cars!
Did you refurb the original dampers or have you changed to something else?
Mohitos, I missed the start of the session. Only left Manchester at 2:45pm and had to stop for fuel. Amazed I got there for any track time at all! What were you in?
V8KSN,
Refurbed the original as its still primarily a road car for me (12,000 miles last year). I'm running about 2 3/4 deg at the front and 2 1/2 at the rear. Surprised you had to change the top mounts to get more neg though. I know guys running close to 4 with the standard top mounts.
You can monoball and solid puck the standard lower arms. You don't need to go for the full RSS arm. Though they do look sexy as hell!

I didn't change the top mounts just to get more negative camber (that was a nice side effect) I changed them because the old ones were knackered Refurbed the original as its still primarily a road car for me (12,000 miles last year). Going down the monoball and solid puck route is probably the best solution actually!

You timed it well in that case, as it was VERY slippery for the first 45 mins or so.I was in a white 968 Club Sport (red decals / wheels).

Very nice that was too! I meant to pop up and say hi / have a snoop / rob some parts for my 924
... but as always I quickly got a bit caught up in it all.First time at Brands, the sighting lap - drop down from Paddock - had me a little worried, but was absolutely loving after a few laps. Despite being the slowest car on track I had a blast!
A few pax laps with jackwood put everything into perspective - the grip on those tyres is insane! And likewise, Ben__7's 964... no tyre grip, but what a great car, the shove on that thing is incredible, utterly beyond expectation. Thanks guys

Grabbed a quick photo from the pit lane, pre-sighting lap...
Love to see some proper photos if anyone has any - some great cars there and that pit straight does wonders with the noise.

Toyo R1R's.Had only done wet days with them , found them good in the wet and was very surprised at the amount of grip when the dry line appeared , I use them as my normal road tyre and wet/dry day track tyre..
Have a set of non road legal 888's on another set of wheels , the R1R's are a great compromise
Hywelrsvr is in the Orange car , running 888's
