Hi all,

I have a 2006 Cayman S, with 100k kms (62k miles) on the clock. I bought it nearly 2 years ago from an OPC.

End of August I need to decide if I'm going to renew the warranty - EUR1,500.
As I'm not doing that much kilometers (10k a year average) I don't think I will renew it, and put the money "saved" into a fix-the-car fund.

However as a 2 year service is also due - should I pay the extra and get that done at an OPC so that they can rectify things under warranty if required, and then move to a good indie - or simply start using a good indie now ?
Service pricing from an indie is EUR500 compared to EUR750 from an OPC (including a brake fluid change)

Cheers

same - have a 2006 cayman s with 25k miles... am currently at OPC today for the inspection check and MOT...

yes the service prices are higher but I can offset some of that by asking for discount and supplying my own oil.. also it's now 7 years old and more likely to break (and covered under warranty) than less likely... and the courtesy cars are nice... just had a brand new 981s boxster with 35 miles on the clock for the day...

couldn't bring myself to take on debt to get into the new 981s so this is the only realistic option for me...

Same issue with my 997.
i would put it in for standard service with OPC in case anything needs doing under warranty but leave any extra work (like brakes etc) to indy (savings are huge). Then go for indy route thereafter and build up slush fund. Depends on your finances and how lucky you feel! If you can afford the odd big bill, the indy route should save you more in the longer run ( I saved £700 on pads and dics alone in year one).
But if something major lets go....

Cheers both - I think reading my own words back to myself I had probably already come to the same conclusion as yourself DrMark.

Even the price of the Dutch equivalent to the MOT (called an APK) is nearly 50% cheaper with an indy than with an OPC.

So I'll book it into the OPC for a service and get anything done that needs doing under warranty, then hit the indy and save a fortune !

Bear in mind if servicing AND taking a warranty at once you can often totally ditch the 111pt check cost, as the service covers the same items. Then add in savings from haggling and supplying your own oil and the margin will be a little tighter.

I just put a warranty on my 08 987.1S - prefer the safety net. Next year may be different. Then again, next year, I might buy a BMW.

Renew.. have you read the other posts on pre-DFI engines ?

Also .. you dont even an engine fault to reduce you in tears.. think about pretty much ANYTHING electronically related.. and I think you get to warranty cost easy. Gearbox.. similar.. rattles, random faults.. there's so much that can go wrong.

Not worth it. I consider it as part of the running costs of a sports car.. simples.. trouble is.. absurd as it may sound.. it's probably better value for 911 and gt3s.. than for the smaller ones.. as in % of value of the car that is..
