Older Cayenne Turbo, talk to me.

WooHoo, just had a job offer that means bicycle to work and shifts mean only 1 or 2 school runs a week. So something super thirsty should get me alot of bang for my buck. Needs to be able to do family duties at the weekend and a Cayenne Turbo, probably S is firmly at the top of my list with E55 Amg, RS4/6 falling down the ranks and Saab turbo x, R32 passat or Volvo V70 R seeming too sensible at present if I'm going to doing nights so...

2004-6 what do I need to know/fear/look for. At this age I don't expect full Porsche history but some independents as long as it's all there and timely. Big items, suspension, turbos, engine, gearbox, where is the weakest link and is the any specific work I should check has been carried out? Budget as near 15k as possible, well 12-15k.

Things you need to look out for are;

• Coolant pipes. They were plastic originally then updated to alloy. They're difficult to see so a boroscope is usually necessary.
• Gearbox valvebox. Ensure it kicks down smoothly without any clunking.
• Propshaft bearing. They can get rumbly although a good independent will replace the bearing not just the whole shaft.
• Coil packs. The Turbos put a lot of strain on the spark so coil packs can fail. Not that expensive at £30 each, but worth checking.
• Discs and pad are £1k as is a set of tyres. Something to bear in mind when looking.
• Electrics are occasionally prone to gremlins. Check everything works OK.

Desirables are air suspension and PCM although the sat nav is poor by today's standards.

I'm considering selling mine. It's had all the above work done including a new set of N1 Michelins last week. 68k miles. Looking for £12k. PM if interested.

Just paid £350 for rear discs and pads, fitted. So not that pricey really. But all the rest of the advice seems spot on.

Thanks Brewster, very helpful. How has your ownership experience been and any particular reason for sale or just fancy a change?

I want to get a pay packet or 2 in before I buy so looking at 8-10 weeks, PM'd.

The rears are a lot smaller than the fronts though. You wouldn't get much change from £1k for a full set. They are epic cars and good value to buy. They are pricey to keep in good condition though.
