I'm not up on the older 911's but have always loved their simple, neat styling. I spotted this for sale and thought it looked a well cared for car; be interested to hear people's views on this particular model/engine and whether it represents good value or not.

As I say, I'm no expert on this 911 era, so any views would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Looks a nice example but that particular engine was a Porsche low spot (not to be confused with the RS spec 2.7). Better off with a 3.0 SC. Looks the same but one of Porsche's most reliable engines.

I didn't know that. What's wrong with this 2.7?

To be fair, those still running are likely to have been rebuilt and rectifed.

Edited to add: Jeez Molly, nearly 8000 posts? And my wife thinks I need to get out more wink

It's pretty, but the market has never liked the 2.7 models of that era, except perhaps the IB Carrera. £30k would buy an exceptional G50 3.2, 964, 993.... all of which, IMO, are better 911s and a better investment.

car was for sale at GMUND a couple of years ago. lhd US car. great colour combo i think.. keep in mind this is the base model, not even the 911 S (which is the mid model) as the range topper is the carrera 2.7

i believe the owner can be found either on ddk or impactbumpers.com

35k is strong money for base model and US specs in my opinion

If its American spec it will have the K Jetronic injection rather than the mechanical system.
Pushing out a weazy 150 BHP I reckon.
I like the car the period colour and the lovely period cookie cutter alloys.
Still an investment due to rarity.

Trouble is, I've done the G50 3.2, 964 & 993's so i'm now considering a 911 of 60/70's vintage to go with my more modern 997.2; my main problem is I know naff all on these cars so need to do some homework on which ones make a sensible & enjoyable buy.
Thanks for all the comments so far.

No that is incorrect. SC had the Carrera body, early IB 2.7 was the last of the proper narrow body cars, but even this had slightly flaired rear arches.

I owned one, a 2.7S 1976. Nice to look at, but was a low point of the 911 IMO and the engine was fragile. Didn't have the retro feel of the older cars, yet wasn't as quick as the later ones.

Saying that, if burbling along is your thing on a sunny day in the country, it could be perfect. If memory serves however, heck the clutch was heavy.

The link one will be most probs a low power US version, not the mighty 175BHP I had (which was still not enough), I feel its over priced. I'd find a 3.0 Carrera for that money, or better still a late model SC with change for a similar feel.

EDIT. Sorry the above comes across quite negative, apologies didn't mean too. They were part of the 911 story and the narrow body was a pretty car especially with the chrome trim. If you want the total opposite to your latest 911, then go for it. Still put a smile on my face. Good luck with your search.

I would say go over to DDK and seek advice on pre'73 911s. And, definitely attend Classics at the Castle on 8 Sept http://www.classicsatthecastle.com/2013/

Or you could ask the vendor for a little more information ?

They should have all the answers to the questions posed, and more besides.

But let me tell you all what I know, told to me by the last American owner --- and from the restorer.

1. The car was owned for 25 years by it's first owner, a physician. Originating near Michigan, it was never driven in the harsh winters.

When I checked this out it appeared that the car had been a dealer showroom car -- hence the colours, and it was sold (no doubt on a deal) at the very end of the year.
Thus it has the advantage of being a very early car with no catalytic converters or the air pumps that sapped power and caused some heat based unreliability. It's even possible that it had to be sold before the year end for this reason ??

2. The car was stolen and according to the specialist dealer who bought it (he'd also serviced the car for the original owner) it wasn't a pretty sight. He kept the car for two years whilst he* did a huge amount of work to it, whilst retaining it's originality. All the known engine mods were done, the car was re-sprayed but the guy felt that Aubergine was a little bright to he added a couple of drops of black to every quart of paint, making it impossible to match when Gmund needed to tidy a dented front valance. Such was the quality of the car tha it justified a full re-spray at Mark Walker's in Elvington, early in 2011.
It was mark Walker who told me what a fantastic car this was. Bodily almost perfect ...

  • He --- is the principal of the local specialist Porsche dealership, master craftsman, officer of the P Club, --- had a restored 550 in his showroom !
3. Car "sold" to a friend and looked after in exchange for roofing and other work, so no paperwork, but no expense spared.

Why don't I own it any more ?

I exchanged it for a '73 2.4 911S --- because I had bought a '75 2.7 Carrera and didn't need both the 2.7 narrow body and the 2.7 Carrera variants.

4. Problems with the car ?

The 915 gearbox could be a little sticky even though it had a documented restoration not that long ago. repairable ? Yes.

5. Good points about the car ?

All the stuff that money can't buy.

All it's bits and the best original unrestored body shell.

6. Lights ? all are UK spec --- even the headlamp backs were exchanged for RHD versions (not just the lenses) --- I have the LHD versions that came out of it !

7. Value. Asking price --- does not appear to be £35k ?? I saw £32k as a starting price.

True value ? Find another that's comparable --- if you can.

If this is in reply to trial by Pistonheads, then here also is a challenge for all smile

To be honest, after I had done my homework, that was why I bought it.

And to be fair to Andrew at Gmund, he put a lot of work into making it as nice as it now is.

ChrisW,
Many thanks for your detailed & comprehensive write-up.

The car is very very tempting, but to be honest I've only just started my search for an older(60/70's) 911, and I still feel a need to understand the various models and their relative merits more so that I can make a wise choice.

As always, part of the enjoyment is in the search/chase, and I'm reluctant to rush in too soon, even though I may live to regret it.

Many thanks again.

Very wise. Best to carefully decide exactly what you want, then take your time with the search.

In any event, prices are always likely to be a bit peaky at this time of year.

The geo doesn't matter, the 2.7s had CIS rather than MFI everywhere.

Nice looking car, never driven the 2.7, so no idea what it drives like.

very sensible.

I would talk to owners, see if you can get a ride --- tin worm is the only thing that's really expensive to sort.

And that is really expensive ....
