No - that is not a must have; that is simply a personal preference. In terms of must have, imho, if you want to keep the essence of the car, you need to keep the alcantara. I have the alacantara with leather on the dash, door caps, etc and it is a good balance between keeping the car feeling a little special but avoiding it feeling like there are some poor quality surfaces.
In terms of must haves, Sport Chrono and PASM makes a lot of sense given the intent of the car.
The micro site is still up, if you fancy a bit of arm chair excitement

There is no doubt that extended leather / alcantara makes the car a nicer place to be. That said, if it is on your list of 'must have' criteria I fear it will be an extrenely limiting factor for you given how few cars have the option. I had the standard alcantara interior (having coming from a C2S with full leather) and did not miss the leather dash and doors at all.
Other must have's in my opinion are fairly few given the excellent basic spec of the car; sports chrono, colour coded side and front valances. If I recall correctly, PSE is standard. If it's not, that's also a must have.
Mine was PDK and the gearbox was sublime. But as mentioned above, that's a matter of personal preference.
Often wish I'd never parted with it !

Just over 2 years and 22K miles in mine, love it. Leather dash would have been my only other choice but I bought from stock so based my choice on the colours they had available. The stupid lap timer in the middle of the dash that is NEVER used is a complete waste of time.
Agree - the appearance of sports chrono is a waste of time. Unfortunately it is the only way of getting the Sport and Sport Plus options - which are great. As mentioned leather dash nice, I thought on standard suspension the car looks quite high? So maybe sport suspension which I believe reduces ride height by 20mm. However stock suspension would be useful if car is going to be used mainly in town.
Great package one of my favourite 997's. I wish they were slightly louder;)

In two years, I have never, once, had an issue with mine bottoming out and I have the sport suspension - that includes a lot of town driving, on and off ferries, etc, etc. sGreat package one of my favourite 997's. I wish they were slightly louder;)
Re the 997 Turbo - it has more grunt than the GTS but I find the GTS more accessible and enjoyable to drive. If I wanted to feel the sensation of speed in the Turbo, I needed to be going very fast and to make the car feel even remotely 'alive', you had to be going very very fast. The Turbo is exceedingly accomplished but most of the time I felt detached from it and removed from thrill of driving a great sports car. In the GTS, you don't have to be doing silly speeds to make it feel quick and it feels more alive and spirited. As a drivers car, even for long distances, I find the GTS to be a more rewarding and enjoyable car. The GTS isn't a GT3 but IMHO, the GTS is the closest thing Porsche have offered to a GT3 Touring.
Hope that helps
