High pitched whine when cold

And that's not the wife.

Its started about 3 months ago. It sounds a bit like a pump failing but always goes quiet after a few miles. I suspect it may be connected to the ABS pump as it seems to be connected to braking. I had the rear discs and pads changed a few months ago and did not have the dampening pads fitted (they didnt get sent in the kit for some reason). Since then I occasionally hear the disc "whizz" when going over a speed hump of braking slowly. Odd.

Any ideas as to what it might be?

How's the brake fluid level?

Does the noise happen when the car is stationary? When moving? When braking? Need more details.

Sorry it's was a rushed post. Yes it's a 997 2S gen 1. I did check the brake fluid the first time I heard it but not since, will do it again.

It only happens at low speed and stationary but not when initially started up, only once moving.

To be honest I was hoping it may be just some common fault that someone could point a finger at straight away, looks like it isn't. I think my next step will be to retrofit some damper pads so I can cross that's off the list.

If the brake pads should have dampeners fitted and they were not fitted when the pads were replaced I'd do fit proper dampeners first. At the same time whoever does the work can inspect the brakes for any signs of anything else that could account for the noise.

Topped up the steering fluid reservoir and all is now quiet. Whoops. I guess I now have dry and knackered seals.
