Porsche 964 Targa vs. 3.2 Targa.

I have always fancied 964's since they came out, and was impressed with the rawness of one when I went in a colleague's recently. On the other hand the styling of the 3.2 is iconic and something I grew up wanting. I only do 200 miles or so a month, so also like the idea of no depreciation, and am used to 'classic' cars. Decisions...

I am on a budget, so am looking for one of either, probably in targa format to get the best car for the money (low teens). I am aware of the rust issues on the 3.2 and the oil leak issues on the 964, and will go in with my eyes open.

Some options are below - does anyone know these cars?

1) 964 C4 Targa. Local to me, wheels and rear bridge spoiler are a bit OTT to me though - if the car checks out these could presumably come off and be sold? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271057913045?ssPageName=...

2) 964 C2 Targa white, 1991 at eporsch - looks original though at this price will not be perfect, the guys there seem to have a good reputation, does anyone know the car?

3) 3.2 Targa in red, 1985, at TWG - sounds solid, though a long way from me, interesting if it checks out

They are quite different to drive, but I have always preferred the 964 You really need to drive both and see for yourself.

The Targa's seem to be coming back into favour and that red one could be good. Selling the wheels & rear wing would be no problem. And it comes with Sports Seats, which is a nice option to have.

A recent engine rebuild is good, depending on who did it and what was done...

A full Indy PPI is vital on these cars if you don't know them well yourself, as the bills can quickly come to ££££'s.

But enjoy the hunt, they are FUN cars

As said above, you really need to get a test drive in both cars as they're quite different; also, 964 has PAS & 3.2's don't.

I've had both and if I had to pick a 'keeper', I'd probably go for a 964, IMHO naturally.

The 3.2 is the more classic of the two and will be a better longterm purchase
Personally I prefer it looks etc but its a personal preference

If you want to find out more about 964s, there are 10 of us at Donington Park on Sunday. No targas unfortunately but we're all happy to chat in between going on track.

I had a 964, so that would be my choice, not surprisingly. The sports seats are a definite plus. The wheels don't help, but for me when I was looking, power steering, and ABS was important. Personally, I think the 3.2 spoiler looks a bit of an overkill too. Make sure there's no bubbling by the shark fins, and where rear wing meets bumper behind rear wheel.

I'm another person that's in the 964 camp having owned a 3.2, a 964 C2 and a 964 Turbo.

The 3.2s look great and are an icon but they drive like old tractors. Depends what you like though.

Sure the 964 is better to drive and more modern, but if its a weekend classic then the older car will be worth more long-term, like most IB cars now.

How you can state that a 3.2 is far more recognisable than a 964 is beyond me, and I'm not so sure about that last bit about value either; Coupe maybe but Targa is as good or even better bet in a 964 IMO than a 3.2, it suits the shape better as well.

Maybe you should re-read mine. I do not see the 3.2 (as you stated) being 'by a big mile' more of a 'recognisable' classic than the 964. IMO

I prefer the 3.2 Targa and personally think its far more of a classic 911 also.
Although not in Targa form it is the like the 930 an Iconic 911.
Is a 964 Carrera targa Iconic?
