997 turbo help me guys puff of smoke

Guys please help why on cold start do I get a puff of smoke this is not all the time

Because the cylinders are horizontally opposed (boxer style) and small amounts of oil settle in the cylinders and get burnt off on start up.

Normal from 356 to 991.

"They all do that" is often offered as an explanation but often wrong but in this case "they all do that" is right.

Just to add that the smoking should only be at cold start up and should be very short lived and there should be no other symptoms or untoward behavior from the engine.

Help yourself and the engine by not overfilling the engine with oil (but don't run it low on oil either, just be sure that hot the engine oil level is at max but no higher) and don't run the oil *too* long.

Mine used to do it once in a while but hasn't done it since I changed the oil to Millers Nanodrive earlier in the year.

Yep, mine does it aswell. Worried me at first but now I just take a big sniff of it!!

Rockster mentioned a good point about oil. My hot level is bang on middle, should it always be at max?

It can also be caused by condensation build up in a morning.

With my cars I prefer to run the oil level at Max or very near it. For instance my Turbo's oil level is now down 2 bars and I'm going to add oil to bring it up to the Max line again. Whether in my cars' case the higher oil level contributes to the smoking events (which are very infrequent) or not I can't say nor do I care.

What I do care about is ensuring the oil level is nearer to the max line than the min line.

Nothing to worry about, happens to mine now and again, used to happen to my previous car too (c63 amg) so not only a porsche thing.

yep my cayman does it sometimes. clears after about 5 secs, its worries me (hopefully its the norm) but the drive out weighs its

Yip, it happens normally.

Friend picked me up in his new one a few years back. Started with me outside, my look of fear was obviously spotted, thankfully he had done his pre picking up homework!
