How do.

So I am pretty sure I'll be replacing my E28 M5 Replica (see link below) with a 928 next March (that's when the wife dictates I can!).

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Have read Hemmings buyers guide and been looking at classifieds for while.

Just wondered if any owners could share some pearls of wisdom when buying?
Also if anyone has particularly good car they may be offloading around that time, let me know!

It will be a daily driver kept to fairly local drives (I have a Touareg for the long hauls), and will be used all year round.

Love the look of the early cars but want the power and better drive of the S4 cars really without the running costs of the GTS. Budget up to about £8k max.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

1) Get yourself on the 928.org.uk mail list. Lots of friendly advise and owners willing to help
2) Buy the best one you can afford. Never, never buy a cheap one to do up, unless you are mechanically minded. No such thing as a cheap 928, unless you want a stter with problems which can drive you mad if you expect BMW's level of idiotproof-ness.
3) There is no such thing as a cheap to run 928. They were all expensive when new. The GTS is a S4 on steroids, just the same as the 997GTS is a 997 turned up to 11. My GTS is no more expensive to run than my GT or S2 were.
4) Barchetta Boy, who is on here, currently is selling a totally restored 1980 no spoilers car - (£5k+ doors, wings and glass out respray + air con + a rebuilt S2 engine with 320bhp + custom exhaust + 1987 S4 brakes and suspension arms + Koni adjustable shocks and Hypercoil 2.25" springs + full black leather and pasha interior ). If I want an early car with the performance of an S4, this is the only car to buy!
5) Currently there is a great GT for sale on the 928 org website for £8k-ish, which is also a steal, but then you have to live with the later styling.
6) I would not buy an Auto, as it really makes the car a GT, while the 5-spd, when working well makes the car a Gentleman Thug, to blatantly plagiarise a good friend...
7) Get one, Porsche created a masterpiece, which only now they have somewhat replicated with the 991. They are still affordable, although good 5-spd cars are on the up...

I only have a very neglected 928 (4.5) so am not in a position to offer any advice on the grown up stuff, however for what it's worth Rennlist.com seems to be the biggest and best resource on the internet, lots of very useful info and knowledgeable guys who are very generous with their time!

Overall my general impression says get the car ppi'd by someone who specifically knows about 928's, there is a guy in Stroud who, depending on who you believe, seems to be the "guru". Also try to find a car that has had all of it's ongoing routine servicing and maintenance items done as catching up on these things is both expensive and difficult in regards to sourcing good parts.

Alex,

At point in time you're supposed to say : "And it's LHD to boot!"

The 928 section of rennllist.com is THE 928 forum. Have a read there.
Paul Anderson is the guy in Stroud - just down the road from me and the reason I ran two (a S4 and a GTS).
In my view the best of the lot, other than a GTS, is the GT but it depends if you want manual.
Used regularly they are very reliable (I did 30k in my two over 2 years as daily drivers) and are good for 200k plus if you maintain them properly. Used infrequently they often develop electrical glitches - albeit mainly due to poor earths.

Things to check.

If auto - flex plate and thrust bearing.
Look for a recent cambelt and water pump change (interference engine and if belt lets go the valves hit the pistons)
Check all electrics.
Wear on driver's seat
Air con and HVAC system
Dodgy fuel lines
Tired engine mounts
Oil leak from sump gasket is common and regarded as normal but everything should be dry otherwise.
Box goes for ever - slurred changes can often be corrected by adjusting vacuum.
Corrosion generally not an issue - any bubblimg often only at ally / steel interface.
Brakes and suspension surprisingly cheap for a Porsche
Rough idle is often stuck valve but can be ECU issue (£500 rebuild)
Very thirsty.
Very comfortable.

Enjoy - I did.

Can't really add anything useful to the above excellent posts, other than to say that I still miss mine and I sold it over 20 years ago. Don't be put off an auto without trying one, I preferred mine to the manual I tried.

But it not - it is a UK supplied C16 from new 1980 928 in RHD... smile

Thanks all. Some really helpful posts there.
I have read that the quality of shift on manual's can vary wildly dependent on the condition of the vehicle (and more specifically the clutch).
I would prefer a manual, but if buying an auto enables me to get a minter for a reasonable price, I would rather get the car that wants for nothing. Plus I will have a better selection of autos and may even be able to choose on colour and spec.

That early modded one mentioned above sounds awesome, however I'm not in a position to buy yet, so I really should stay away from temptation!

I have read that parts on the GTS are more expensive than the standard S4, so is this not the case?

Haven't seen a good GTS within budget anyway so probably a mute point. 320bhp will be 135 more than I currently have (ie plenty!)

Cheers guys

the only thing I would disagree with is the thought above that one should buy a mint auto over a 'good' manual... they are different cars.

I need to get the aircon fixed on mine (it has new compressor, condensor and rad so for once it really will be 'just a regas') and then as Alex says it will be for sale.

Great, great cars!

A very good early LHD 928 is on my dream car list. And they're almost impossible to find.

Off top of my head I can only think of pads and discs as being more expensive than other 928 parts (larger, and made in small numbers so dearer) out of regular maintenance/consumables

Good early LHD 928 5-spds are there, but they command decent money as collectors are beginning to dip their toes in the mkt... If you are prepared to go French and to do some work yourself...

love my S4 and also looking for a GT manual. Seem to recall that the 5.4 GTS drinks quite a bit more oil than the smaller 5.0. All great cars and both the manual & auto boxes are a delight. Manual is crisp and precise, auto is same unit as in Merc G Wagon so nice and strong smile
Happy hunting !

Is there any way to tell, just by looking, if this is a real SE, or simply a manual S4?

Just by looking I would say it wasn't - the "real" SE had pinstripe cloth rather than perforated leather on the interior and I don't believe they had a sunroof. Every car was built to the customer's specification or the interior may have been swapped along with the wheels (genuine SEs had very rare forged wheels) and the mirrors etc. so it may have started life as an SE - you would have to check the chassis and engine codes to be sure - but I would argue that the unsympathetic (IMHO) modifications mean that it no longer counts as an SE, certainly not enough to justify a premium on the price. The counter argument is that it is the oily bits that matter - if it has a genuine blueprinted SE engine and drives well perhaps the owner would be happy in the knowledge that they were driving an SE, even if nobody else recognised it as such.

You would have to see the car in the metal to see if it were worth the asking price; personally I think it's overpriced, even considering the low mileage, but the mantra that secondhand cars are worth as much as somebody is prepared to pay applies - there may be a buyer out there who thinks it's just the car for them and worth every penny.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the various models. You would be very surprised how similar they all seem to feel to drive.

What's the consensus on price for a very good (wants for nothing but not necessarily concours)S4?

I have seen some very good looking ones up for £8k so that's where I am setting my ceiling price.

Seen some low mileage ones wanting a very optimistic £12k - £15k but I am more concerned with condition than miles as it will be my daily driver, not a pampered show car.

As such minor paintwork blemishes won't be as important as rock solid mechanicals.
